Well folks, this is my latest acquisition and I must say that I like it very much; she's 38.5 inches of rock solid Mossberg. I added the S&J Hardware +2 Extension
and I have a really nice Specter 3-point SOP sling with buttstock shell holder on the way to complete the package. I won't be putting a side-saddle on it, primarily
because I just don't like how they mess up the carry point of the gun.

Very nice.I love the look of the marine coat finish.

Did the +2 extension come with matching finish from S&J or did you go elsewhere to have it applied?

After a lot of research on the internet, an email to Mossberg (with no response) and six different colours of spray paint later, I did it myself at home.
The great thing about a Parkerized finish - which is how the extension comes - is that paint adheres to it very well if you prep it properly.

Where did you buy the 590A1 Mariner and how much was it? Only ones I see for sale are the Flex version...

I picked it at Milarm, a local gun store in Edmonton, while they had an excellent sale going on and I paid a staggering $410 (tax included) for this puppy. I went there
intent on getting something else, but when I saw the price they were asking for the 590A1 Mariner I asked if they had any "new-in-the-box" I could inspect. When
they brought out a fresh one and I was happy with what I saw (Mossberg's QC can be a little hit and miss), I snapped it up quite eagerly. :) Last time I looked at their website,
they still had the Mariner in stock, but at closer to normal pricing.

Do they not make the 9 shot version anymore?

Nice pump OP, have one myself, it's a tank

Mossberg still makes the 590 Mariner in the 20 inch, 8 +1 version - have a look at Cabela's .ca website.
They never made the 590A1 Mariner in the 8 +1 configuration, they only made it in the 18.5 inch 5 +1 configuration like I have.
But add an S&J +2 extension and you end up with a nice 38.5 inch 7 +1 as shown above.

Yes, I totally agree with you, they are built like a tank; which is exactly what I was looking for - makes for a great camp/bush/truck gun.

The weak link is the bead mounted directly on the barrel. For the bead sight to be correctly regulated, it must be equal to the height of the receiver, which is effectively your rear sight. Since the receiver is higher than a bead that is mounted directly on the barrel (a condition exaggerated by the taper of the barrel) without a raiser or pedestal under the bead, the gun will shoot high regardless of whether a slug or shot is fired. Your first attempt to pattern the gun will support this premise. The solution is to install a raised bead, like XS's Big Dot Shotgun Sight, install rifle sights, which I like, but that aren't everyone's cup of tea, or install an optic. The Big Dot can be simply glued over the existing bead, making it a simple, inexpensive, do it yourself fix.

Great price. Someone posted they had a huge sale with big savings like that. Checked out their website and it was right from 1999 or I would have purchased something. No online purchases and an out of date stock list. They have a 590 Mariner listed, definitely not the same shotgun as a 590A1 Mariner w/heavy walled barrel and metal trigger guard.

Thanks Boomer, I wasn't aware of the regulation issues - I'll pay close attention when I get the chance to pattern it. I was considering the install of a Meprolight tritium front sight, but I'll
compare it to the XS Big Dot and see how they stack up. Primarily, I want to keep the gun as simple and unencumbered as possible, so I have no plans to upgrade the sights beyond the
basic bead style ( or a close equivalent ). Thanks for the heads up.

On page 2 of 3 they list a Mossberg 590A1 Mariner for $629 and the list was last updated August 25/15. Their Website also has a shopping cart.
Granted their website is not the easiest to navigate, but I just checked it out and that is what I found. You could always phone them the old fashioned
way - that still works... I think. ;)

Didn't see the additional pages and not having clickable items going to a cart is strange. That was the floor model that you passed on, right? This finish can be problematic if banged around... I think you did the best thing and picked it out in person. For what you paid, I would have jumped on that sight unseen. Don't know how they made money on that deal as a regular 500 or 590 Mariner are over $500 retail.

Good for you as that's a beauty shotgun.

Yah, I have had some bad experiences buying Mossberg products online. Now, if it's Mossberg, I have to be able to see it for myself before I'll buy it.
Don't get me wrong, The Mossberg 500/590/590A1 shotguns are an excellently designed and well made shotgun that will probably outlast their owners,
but sometimes it seems that Mossberg's QC department went on holiday and never bothered to come back.

Yes, it was the floor model I passed on, but it's only problem was being a little dirty and the finish was a little worn, but anybody getting a parkerized finish has to
expect that finish to age rapidly (in appearance anyway) and the Mariner's finish is no different. But I bought it as tough, dependable working gun that
I can drag through the bush, throw it in the bottom of the boat and let if fall in the dirt without worrying about it, so I'm very happy with it.
