My new Sako 85 Kodiak was delivered to the house last week. Can't wait get it out for a test run and then chase grizzlies this spring! :)

I'm going to run some ammo through it with just the irons at this point and see how I do with it to around a 100 or so. My eye sight is still good once things are more than a foot past my face. :) I do have a 4-12X40 Leupold just sitting in a box so maybe that one. I have a bunch 270 gr TSX that I'll probably fiddle around with and see how they shoot. Now, do I got Optilock or other? :)

Personally, I wouldn't go with a 4x on a grizz rifle..... Not that I have any grizz hunting experience, so take that with a grain of salt.....

I would try the irons, and if you aren't satisfied, I would look for a qd setup and a scope with low mag as Hoytcanon pointed out....

I have a VX3 2.5-8x36 on my .375 Ruger Alaskan. I think it's a good compromise, 2.5x for up close and crank it to 8x for longer shot.

It's funny how people will think nothing of putting a 3X9 on an .30-06 but think it's wrong on a .375, even though a 180 gr '06 trajectory is pretty close to a 270 gr .375. If my draw was in coastal BC I'd probably leave the irons on but its for the top north west corner, actually have to go through Yukon and back into BC to get into my area. Lots of viz if you stay out of the willow thickets. :)

I actually think it's wrong in all cases..... But I am no sniper..... I have shot timberwolf at 300 yards and elk at 250 and deer at 20.....

If I was looking to reach out on the prairies, I would want more.... But I prefer not to have a brown patch to shoot at when at lowest magnification....

Let's put it this way.... My furthest comfortable distance is 300 yards.... At a max 7x on a good scope, that makes the target appear to be less than 55 yards away.....

Conversely, if your target pops up at 55 yards and you have a 4x on lowest magnification, your target appears as less than 15 yards away....and you can't make out the full contour......

I would rather be worried about turning up for the max than be worried about trying to turn down and running out of room .....

But then again, part of hunting to me is about gtting as close to my prey as possible.....

The 3-9 seems to be the standard.... And I never got that..... It certainly isn't for me....

No doubt you will get lots of advice on optics but use whatever you are most comfortable with.
My 375s have worn 2.5 Lyman Alaskans, 3X Leupolds, 3.5-10X40 Leupolds, 2.5-8X36 and 1.5-5 Leupolds just to name a few, but currently it carries the 1.5-5 and for me it works just fine.
My 375 Ruger / Howa wears a 1.5-6X42 Swarovski Habicht glass and I really like it..

I have the Kodiak and mounted a VX6 1-6x24 with Sako low direct mount rings. I use Hornady 250 Gr. GMX. (Don't hand load). It is tits. Both eyes open on low magnification and red dot is activated by movement.

Own a CZ550 FS in 9.3x62 and this is the scope I went with. 30mm tube and this magnification is perfect for up close and personal but can reach out when needed!

Pointy sticks with open sights (or no sights) work too... so much of the debate is moot... suffice it to say, I would rather err on the low end of the power range... when all you see in the scope is brown, you might think, "I guess I shoulda..."

1-4, 1.5-5, 1.75-6, 2.5-8 are good compromises, without getting carried away.
