I just received the rifle today and was delighted to say the least. I do not believe it has ever been issued...appears new. It is covered with a protectant of some sort....not cosmoline as I know it....it is a brownish sticky substance which doesn't really detract from the appearance but I would like to get it clean. 1950 Longbranch, Ser. # 93L15XX. Can anyone give advise about removal of the protectant? Dave

Aside from being very entertaining, this is a great idea for removing that slimy crud...

I've had good luck with engine degreaser, HOT tap water and rags. Be sure to reoil and reapply the linseed oil to the wood.

But, there may be grease in places where you don't need to clean too thoroughly. It is a protective layer after all.

Sorry to hear, but this is bad news indeed.

The sticky stuff is fungus, it means the rifle has 'gone bad', not surprising, it's 57 years old. These things happen.

To be safe, please send it to me and I'll double confirm the diagnosis and dispose of it as necessary.

Cleaning your new gun

I just would use varsol, a rag and some brushes to clean the preservative off. Used to use carbon tetrochloride but that is illegal now.
