Got my colt m16 A1 upper today real nice old school upper from what i can tell of the markings it was made in 1967 it has a chrome chamber but not chrome bore

barrel is marked MP between front sight and has a C about 1 inch from flashhider

front sight has a bell

upper has marks I cant make out

like the bigass forward assist button and NO case deflector

of course it has the A1 rear sight and the front sight post is round

barrel twist is 1/12 20" barrel

it has the normal small pins to mount it

I have an stripped lower comming from wolverine and im going to build the lower with A1 stock and grip (right now its on an sgw lower i use my 16" upper on)

so who else likes the old A1's ???

Nice but you should ditch the grip and make it look more authentic..

Nice, now like Strangeday mentioned you need a 3 prong flash hider !

actually I pretty sure the date of the barrel is 1967 they were installing the flashider thats on it then(at least from what ive read correct me if im wrong)

I've got an old model A1 upper receiver in excellent condition for sale in the EE. The old ones had the GREAY finish, which is hard to match up to.

Nice. I have an older SP1 upper with no F/Assist, as well as an as new M16 butt and pistol grip and a 3 prong flash eliminator.

Now If I can just get an SP1 lower to complete the package!

Maybe it's my age or something, but there's just something cool about the A1 + SP1. If you can live without a rail mounted cup holder.

I find it a little strange that you plan on keeping the flash hider because you believe it to be more correct for the period, yet you are going to put it on a brand new A2 style lower.

well if you know of any slab sided lowers small pin with normal size firecontroll pins let me know

I can also grind my lower back to a1 look basically remove the re-enforceing added after the a1's showed breakage in certian areas but i could also ruin a new reciever

99% of guys wont know the small differences between the a1 and a2 lowers

around 67 they started with the fullfenced lowers anyways

Slabside? That would make it an early model Colt 601 not an M16A1.

You are correct about the full fence lower. However the A1 lower receiver didn't have the reinforcements around the lower extension and the pivot pin lugs are at 90 degrees as opposed to the rounded style of the A2.

You're right about the fact that most people won't notice, but if it matters to you (and it might not) than it is relatively easy to find them on the EE.

My A1 lower is PWA (now LMT). Their is at least one for sale right now, but it is a complete gun.

IIRC their is an A1 style SGW lower for sale right now as well. I'd buy both of those guns right now if I had the cash, since I'm going through a bit of a retro phase right now.

well i took this upper to the range today I was useing my 55grn fmjbt reloads i did not adjust the sights at all and at 100 meters with the irons i was able to hit pieces of clay birds 1/4 of a bird size pieces this upper shoots real well!!

its my new fav ar15

That looks great!

I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go with an A2 lower as well. I might take the rails off the mag housing but that's all of the mods I'd feel comfortable doing myself.
