My New Marlin 1894

I have always wanted one of those so I could shoot .38 Special's from it. I thin it would make a fantastic fun gopher/rabbit rifle. If I were to ever recommend a rifle to someone for home defense, that would be it. I've always liked the look and feel of that little rifle. Congrats.

And to Marlin Firearms company...please tighten-up your QC!!!
X2. Mine came with a couple of noticeable scratches in the blueing presumably caused when the rear sight was installed. The wood fit and finish are not great either.

More troubling however is the possibility that the scope base holes in the receiver are out of alignment. With the current Weaver rings and base it is shooting to POA at 50 yards but to the right at 25 yards and to the left at 100. I'm going to try a set of Millet rings to see that sorts the problem out. If not I'll go with ghost rings. This was never intended to be a long range rifle in any event and open sights will be equally acceptable.

Mine is accurate, shooting cloverleaf groups at 25 yards, 1.5" at 50 yards and 4.0" at 100. It feeds .357 like butter but is more particular about .38 Spl. and sometimes hangs up on semi-wadcutters.

Make sure your OAL on the .38 spl is at least 1.5" I reload 38 and 357 for CAS at 1.52" OAL for both and it works great.

Marlins are OAL sensitive and both the SASS and CAS City sites all state that 1.5" OAL is the best. Semi wadcutters are not recommended for lever action rifles.

some gun #### for ya

Wow Thats a new one ....A rifle that shoots curveballs and isn't keyholing

It turns out it wasn't the rifle or the mounting holes. A range session yesterday with Millet rings seems to have sorted the problem out. The rifle now shoots the same windage at all distances.

FWIW, the Marlins seem to like heavier bullets. The 158 grain Remington UMC softpoints are very accurate in my rifle.

I think everything you said about the 357 could be said about the 44 mag, in spades!
Mine is far and away, my most fun gun. I started grand sons out on it when they were ten. Loaded very light, it shot well at shorter ranges, like to 50 yards, and made a big hole in the target. As they got older I kept loading it a little heavier, and they eventually got to full power load, with absolutely no thought, or reaction from the recoil.
The 44 magnum cartridge is about the most forgiving, regarding accuracy with different loadings, of any cartridge I have reloaded for. In the case of loading very light for kids, we just sighted in at the low speeds. Then, as power increased, we just dropped the Williams aperature sight down a few clicks.

That is sweet. I almost picked up one of those a while back and then I waited too long and the price increase turned me away. Lucky for me; my prayers were answered when someone answered my WTB ad on another site. I am now the proud owner of one of these beauties in .357 - It is an older one with no checkering and no lawyer approved cross-bolt safety. I think it is now my new favorite rifle. I won't let the other 4 Marlins I own know how I feel though. LOL

About 2 years ago, P&D bought about a half-dozen used Marlins in .357. IIRC, they were purchased as a lot from the factory. The price was right, so I bought one. I'm embarrassed to admit, I haven't shot it yet  (so many guns, so little time).

Mine was built before the quality took a plunge but, considering some of your experiences with accuracy/feeding/etc., I should take her out and test fire - there could be a smithing project hiding in my safe.

ok finally got it out to the range kinda shoots (or could be me) to the upper left but groupings were good. this is my first long gun besides a 12 gauge so have no idea if it is off or not. any suggestions for a scope for this where $$$ etc would all be great.

I got one of those, just plain fun, everyone that sees it (non-shooters included) wants their picture taken with it. Want one in 44 also a 95 in 45/70 and a SA in 44 mag. When does it end?

I Got on in .44 mag for grad. I like it, good camp gun but very short range it seems. had to put a fiber optic front sight on to see it better with dark back ground but over all its been a good reliable gun.

wow, nice!!! I have not purchased my new rifle as I am a newb also, I am still looking though... BLR308 win?anyone I am excited!!
