What is the average distance of your shots while hunting?

I don't think I have taken a moose at more than 70m, let alone even seen one over 150m away.
A fixed 4x should be fine at those distances, right?

I wouldn't mind hearing what other people use on their 9.3 rifles.

Mine will be wearing the old Zeiss DDR more often than not for hunting. I will also have a 2.5-8 VX III in another set of rings ready to be used should my eyes not feel up to the task with the low power.

Your 2-7 is right on the money IMO.

I've got a Leupold 2-7X33 on my 9.3X62. It sits in conventional medium height Leupold rings on standard bases. The rear base is a modified FN with .5" hole spacing.

I have zero tolerance to move the scope fore or aft in the rings. Fortunately, the scope sits right where I want it.

I run a 2-7 right now but the area I'm hunting Elk this season is very open with the herd typically staying on top of the hills during the daylight. Shots of 200+yds are very common and I like fixed power optics better than variable. I could go 4x instead of the 6x depending on what comes down the pipe in the next couple of months
 
Noel, part of me wants to use an older classic scope like your Zeiss. How does the quality of the glass compare to your newer scopes?

I use a 3-9x40 Zeiss on my 9,3mm ,but had to send it back since it had more than 5"of Parallax at 100yds.I sure am hoping that that kind of Parallax has not become a common thing for Zeiss scopes or the can keep that lemon.
 
the 2-7x28 is a lousy scope. blurry around the edges, short and critical eye relief, and not very bright.

the 2-7x33 is far better, especially the newer VX-II series with the multi-coat.

The optic itself is crisp and bright. It is a fixed 4X w/German #4 reticle. The edges of the field of view haze just ever so slight but the field you can see is so big it is of no concern.

One thing I really like is the ability to quickly focus the scope with the turn of a dial on the scope tube.

The post reticle has proven to be no fun at all for target work. I will be using my VX III for load development and then use the DDR for hunting. It is a neat "period" scope for the rifle so I will be giving it an honest go before putting the Leupold on permanently. I really like that little variable tho so I am really on the fence.......:rolleyes:

I don't know how hard they are to find for purchase. I did get contacted by a Gent in Mongolia to buy mine. :eek: He said he has been looking for one for a long time.

Good for you Jarrod! To be honest you were pretty sneaky about it. I've never seen you light up.

First off you have to go buy a ZG, ZKK or the like so you can actually use it.
The mount is permanently fixed to the scope if memory serves correct.

I think you should get one in 10.75x68. That would round out your collection nicely.

Ok Noel, I don't actually smoke but i do want a fixed Zeiss and to be honest I think that rig of yours would look way better with a stainless redfeild or even a Mossy oak Tasco. I'm just trying to help a brother out here thats all.

The problem with the Leupold 2-7x33 is that it doesn't come in gloss. :(

I would only use a matte scope if it was a VX-III and free. If anybody is feeling generous and wants to donate one, I would appreciate it. ;)

If I don't get any donations, I'm going to pass on the variables and go with a fixed 4x.

There is alot of generosity around these parts lately.:p

Fortunate for me a very kind CGNer sold me his gloss 2.5-8 so I have it made in the shade.....:cool:

It will be a miracle if I get time to go shooting anytime soon. I am going through withdrawl!:(

When the cast boolits my friend made show up there will be no more holding back. Hello moosey, meet Mr. 319gr cast slug!:evil:
