My new Mossberg 100ATR .270 (with pics!)

Thanks for the well written review. Those groups aren't too shabby either...

I'd imagine that after a few boxes and several cleanings, they might shrink a little. To get a real idea of the accuracy of the rifle, try shooting it with both a front and rear rest.

Enjoy the rifle! And WRT the $40 Chinese scope... I'd treat it like it's what I had until you've got some cash burning a hole in your pocket, and a good deal comes up here in the EE.

In the '60s, drag racers had a saying "Run what ya brung."

Great Rifles!
BTW: Where did yah get the neat little Rifle stand?

That "stand" is just a mini camera tripod with a long 1/4-20 coupler bolt threaded on it. On top of that is plastic coated "u" hook from a hardware store. The "u" hook has a screw thread but it still tightens up in the 1/4-20 machine thread. Makes for a perfect fit for the forestock to rest on.

As for the country of manufacture: As shown by the sticker that I left on for the first pitcure, it is "Made in USA". Mossberg bought out Charter Arms (or at least the rifle division) and they are apparently still made in Connecticut. I think that bodes well for availability of replacement parts in the future, if so needed.

Good idea with the Fore-end mount. :D

BTW this is what Mossberg emailed me this morning:

The 100ATR's are made in the United States. We have plants in Connecticut (main facility) and another in Texas.
:)

Hows it going dieseldog6? Have you done anymore shooting with your mossberg? Im thinking of getting 1 in 270 or .243 if I can find someone selling the .243.

That will put venison on the table but like someone else mentioned , loosen the action screw and see if you can wiggle it in the stock . If you can bedding is easy and cheap and will probably cut your group size substantially .

Thanks for the Look & review of the ATR :)
Tough to go wrong for that Price....they are Giving them away IMO;)
I agree about the scope though...definately upgrade that ASAP.
I've tried some cheap scopes and while they do work (for awhile) when they fail it sucks........on a Hunting rifle when you're out in the field it sucks even more;)
Great Report & Happy Hunting

Excellent review.....IMHO, also demonstrated integrity and sincerity on part of the individual. I'd say those groups are good enough for the range and game you have in mind.

I don't believe for a minute that you're not a gun writer...great review, sounds like you did your homework and that you're hooked.

Update on my Mossberg 100ATR

Thanks for all your comments everyone.

I have only had one opportunity to shoot this rifle again. I took my oldest son (just turned 11) out this summer to the bush and we set up some targets in front of an existing backstop. It was really a chance for him to shoot our .22 rifle, but I managed to try some Federal Premium 130g rounds.

Due to the terrain I could only shoot to about 75yds. I had a card table and sandbags which worked well but wasn't nearly as stable as a proper shooting bench. My result was somewhat predictable - I shot a few 3-shot groups and each was no better than those of my initial review here. However, the spread was mostly horizontal while the elevation of each group was around moa (3/4" difference). I assume that this spread was basically shooter error.

I also managed to go looking for mule deer for a few days at the beginning of October. I drove to some areas and usually got out and hiked into some still-hunting spots. I only saw does (no doe tag) and therefor did not get a chance to shoot the rifle in the field. I can at least say that I found the rifle easy to carry. Being a big guy (6'-4", 240 lbs) the rifle felt very light to me. I doubt that I'll ever want to consider a "light mountain rifle" as a necessity.

On the negative side, my feelings regarding the blind mag haven't changed. I can really see the advantage of being able just pop in or out a mag instead of having to load in or cycle out cartridges every time you get in or out of a vehicle. Although I don't consider myself a "road hunter", sometimes exploring new terrain leads to multiple short drives in a day.

The cheap scope is still on for now. I promise to install at least a 3200 Elite or Nikon Prostaff in the future. For now, though, the cost of dental braces for two boys is 'biting' into my wallet hard!;)

PS - when I bought some ammo at a local shop (Hunter's Sporting Goods in Surrey) I noticed they had a 100ATR for sale. I didn't manage to see the price though.

Regards to all.

I just got back from my moose hunting week and i got a nice bull calf at 115 yards one shot with my ATR 100 IN .270, with 140 swift A-Frame bullet, droppped him in his tracks. The rifle worked great, I 've had mine 2 years now and never a problem. Now maybe I'll use it for deer in Nov.

ROFL - yeah, i personally NEVER risk using a rifle on deer till i've tried it on something easier, like a moose :)

Congrats on the calf - and congrats on the shootin' iron! Sounds like those atr's are shooters by all accounts.
