About a year ago I purchased a rack grade Springfield Armory M1 less wood from the CMP. It took a little while to find the right parts, new barrel and stock but now she's finished. The entire action and all stock metal is correct for the June 44' SR# except the barrel. In my search I came across a new, in the white, Marlin barrel dated 8-53. Installed it with a proper index and had the entire action, including the stock metal, re-parked. Did a little wood work on a stock set also from the CMP and then hit the range. It's been a little cold here lately and have only been to the line once but I pretty happy with the package. Looks good AND shoots good. The target is 12 rounds of Greek surplus HXP off a bench at 100 yards. My first match, from position, will be in two weeks. Hope we can do as well then!!!

hey rifle guy Nice rifle. What did you do to get the stock looking like that? I am restoring a 44 Garand too dated in November. Fun ain't it!

The CMP stock sets start out as Boyd's. They're shipped to Dupage who trims them down a bit more like a WWII profile, then they are given a coat of BLO. I stripped the finnish on mine, did a little inletting and contouring and gave it a final sanding after raising the grain a couple times. The finnish is a 50/50 mix of BLO and a dark walnut stain. It shows the grain nicely but is quite a bit lighter than a WWII finnish. After I added the color i've rubbed in, so far, 3 coats of plain BLO. Two or three more coats will likely do it.

Oh ya! The ammo! That's also from the CMP. They received something like 30M rounds of Greek surplus, head stamp HXP. Made to WWII specs, non corosive, accurate and reloadable! Good Stuff! Don't confuse HXP with the junk commercial Olympic ammo that's out there.

Glad you like the rifle, now I need to find an SA from 6-52 for my next project.

Beauty. Wish we had something like the CMP up here!
yes, but what could you get?- lee enfield no 4, and that's about it- the fnc1 or a1 was "FAR TOO DANGEROUS' FOR us "civilans" and has been restricted /prohibited since 1975 or so ( but it was fine for us to own an imported copy at one time) but was fine to issue to a 16 or 17 year old kid after going through basic- never mind the fact a lot of us had already been through the mill-actually the question "do you or have you had military training?" is never asked in any context as far as firearms go from what i remember- makes their safety couse redundant
there used to be a civilan thing up here called domion of canada something or other, but it didn't retail surplus firearms
the us also has something in their constitution called the second amendment, which , in effect says that every citizen is a soldier and MUST be provided the means to that end-
that's the reason for the cmp and the us always builds far more of everything than they need and as these become, dare i say it, obsolete, releases them to the public- we do a very limited thing here in canada, but NEVER with firearms unless you want a no4 enfield-and that's done through a network of surplus dealers- anything halfway current like the c1 and the sterlings is sent to the smelter-

Very nice rifle!! My goodness!! The government sell us guns??!! Eeewwww!! Wendy would fall over backwards! It is far better to chopsaw perfectly good rifles, even if they are 80 yr old Enfields. The RCMP melted down nearly all their S&W revolvers, wouldn't even let the people who carried their revolver for 20+ years have a chance to purchase. Good, clear thinking. The money from the sale of the revolvers could have been put to safety courses (free) for those of us unwashed who own firearms. Naw, better melt them down, much more sensible. :p :p

Boyds has overstock of M1 Stocks right now, but no hand guards expected for next 2 months. As of last week when I ordered 2, they still 42 in stock. $32.00US unfinished.

Due to the fact they are "Overstock" they sometimes have flaws.......I'll be posting about the quality when they arrive.
