I have been looking to upgrade the optics on my Sako TRG 22 for the last couple months and although I originally wanted a 5.5-22 I found a great deal on a new 3.5-15x56 Nightforce NXS. A couple days later I found a new SB 4-16x50 for too good a deal to pass up so I picked it up also.

My only concern is that I will wish I had more magnification.

Would you feel adequetly "scoped" for engaging steel plates out to 1000m with scopes in this magnification range? As I said I'm mostly "plinking" right now but may want to try FTR one day. Enough scope for F-class? Thoughts?

Anyway, heres some pics:

well as im sure you know, clarity makes up huge for magnification and it looks like you got some of the clearest glass that can be had! so for bashing a gong id say your more then set!

kinda jealous haha

USO SN3 sitting ontop of an HS50 .. if i wasnt jealous at the beginning of the post, i sure as hell am now..

nice pieces.. ya bastaad :p

Thanks, lets just say I had to move a few pieces to help pay for these.

Also, the wife says I'm now officially "cut off" Not sure what that refers to but either way it can't be good!:p

think she means youre cut off from buying any more things for her, atleast thats the way i interpret it when mine tells me that :D

I don't think you will have issues at 1000, I use a fixed 10x on one rifle to bang plates (12"x12") out to 1200. My plates are bright orange or white however. If your plates are more like a larue popper that is painted earth tones you may need more magnification, but then again I have not looked through a S&B. Scared I may fall in love and give the visa a workout!

How thick are the crosshairs on the S&B? I don't have much comp experience, more magnification would be nice, but a thick reticule is a real killer. If magnification is problem you could probably trade that NSX for a BR model easily.

You have some pretty nice kit there, that's for sure!

took my TRG-22 out this weekend for some average long range. 800 yards on 6 inch balloons and i have a nightforce benchrest 8-32x np2dd. I switched to my leupold mark 4-4.5-14x50 with TMR reticle. It was an overcast day and as it dried out, the sun came out and made some nice heat waves. I put 8 balloons on a 4ftx2ft backdrop and call the shots. My spotter and I, hit 40 out of 45 for the day. Sucks when you leave 5 balloons up with no more bullets. haha.I was dialing back between 11x and 14x on the mark 4.I have engaged targets up to 1160 yards with my mark 4 with 14x. Even then when it is sunny i will dial back to 11x. Higher mag is good for one thing, reading mirage.I use 22x on my nightforce for 220 yard pinpointing and i find that too much sometimes, especially when there is scorching sun waves. For plinking and hits, i like my mark4 on 11x or 14x. For tight groups at 220 yards then i like a little more mag. This weekend, weather permitting, i will try the nightforce at higher magnification. I am more used to the mark 4 as i find higher magnification is something i haven't learned to shoot as well with yet. More flick and heartbeat in the scope. You have plenty of magnification with either scope for 1000 yard shots and don't let anybody tell you different. You should have the proper elevation as well with those scopes even with a zero rail mount.

Thanks,

The NP-R1 reticle in the NSX is definetly finer than the Mildot-Bryant reticle in the SB. Its what I mounted for now until I get some 34mm rings.

Out with the Elite 6500 Tactical, in with the Nightforce:

I am interested in Fclass so that is why i bought the 8x32 np2dd reticle. Everybody who uses this scope for fclass loves it and i am very happy with the reticle. i think the np-2dd reticle is great for tight stuff. I actually prefer the dot now for the sharp shooting stuff. Most guys will back this up. 1/8 moa increments and very smooth clicks. I really like the glass on this scope but would have to say the mark 4 is a bit warmer in color where the nightforce looks a bit on the blue side. You asked if your scopes where good for fclass and i would probably say get the higher magnification.I cannot say from experience from fclass comps but i do know that higher magnification really helps me out for 220 yard groups. Again, i only use between 18-22 power at that range. Higher magnification is great for mirage/wind reading. Most guys opt for the 12-42. I went with the 8x32 because there is 50 moa as opposed to 40 moa on the 12-42. Right now with a zero rail on the TRG, i have 25 1/4 up and 24 3/4 down. Add the 20 moa Badger Ordanance rail i am putting on it will give me 44 3/4 moa elevation still being able to keep the 110 yard "0" (in theory) That was my reasoning for the 8-32. I still wanted my 110 yard "0". I find when i do the 1000 yard shots with my mark 4 TMR reticle that it is very thin. Better than to thick though. That is why i like the open center of the TMR reticle for plinking. You can still see the target without the crosshairs blocking it. Like i said, my target backdrops are 4ftx2ft with black electrical tape as a crosshairs on backdrop for lining up. The reticle and the tape on the backdrop at that range almost cancel each other out.

The NXS scope you have is deadly awesome. Put to the test between the NXS and benchrest and i could not tell the difference. Some will say the BR is clearer because of the front bell parralax. I could not tell with my eyes which are 20/20. If you are thinking about fclass i would get the np2dd reticle in higher mag.

My next scope will be a NXS 3-12 or the 5-22 for plinking or long range hits. I am going to get a 700 LTR just to throw the mark 4 on and the TRG 20 inch is in the works.I will get that 20 incher out to 1000 yards. Sell the custom Lap and get another TRG.
