My new project gun: 7.62X39 Valmet Hunter :)

Hey, no worries about being a #### lol

I didn't buy the gun on here; it was a local purchase, and was advertised as 7.62X39, not as a conversion. I'll have to look into it. It may or may not be the gun that was fos sale on here; I didn't see that EE ad. Fenceline, do you recall who had that one for sale on here? I paid considerably less than $2900...

Any word on the origins of the rifle? Specifically the 7.62x39 nature of it?

Cobra, sorry I haven't gotten back to you but I'll PM you on the trigger group shortly. Have some parts coming in that you'll find useful.

Sweet, thanks :)

To answer the other questions, I'm not sure what muzzle device will be going on it yet. So far as its origin - yes, it was apparently professionally converted from .308 to 7.62x39

This thing is going to be freaking sweet when it's done. Expensive, but sweet!!

This definitely isn't the optic that'll be on the finished product... I'm thinking a TRS25 or Sparc

Did they have to do anything to the magazine well to make it accept AK mags vs the 308 mags? One would think so, interested in pics of any noticable modifications.

My only fear about this whole idea is that it will take a defense attorney about $15k to explain how this IS NOT AN AK47 at trial. It's so scary looking it will generate a lot of "interest" from police when it's seen.

I know he wants it to look like a Galil, but everyone will be calling it an AK47 in a courtroom. HAHA

It's still a cool idea, but I wonder if it will be worth the hassle.

Judge, after a 2 long explanation : "So, your client CONVERTED it into an AK?" ;)

In all seriousness, I've myself legally modified NR firearms knowing it could get me in trouble just because of people's ignorance.
The fact of the matter is, I'm firmly against the principle of not doing things out of shear fear. Whats the point of defining certain objects as legal if you give in and act like they weren't? That's nothing more than self-supressing your own rights. Way, way worst than being trialed if you ask me.

A major part of why I'm doing it, and documenting the conversion, is that I can, and it's perfectly legal: I want to be able to point out the absurdity of 12.5 every time I take this gun out. I'm not modifying the receiver in any way, aside from the caliber conversion that's already been completed.

I actually kind of wish the long-gun registry was still in place, so I could show the non-restricted registration certificate to any curious LEO and/or Liberal I come across :)

Call the CFC and tell them you are standing in solidarity with Quebec, and you would like to register your non-Restricted Valmet. It shouldn't be against the law as you're voluntarily opting in. Insist that they send you a Registration Certificate.

Worth a shot?

The only problem with this thread and your conversion is that it will make me jealous and want my own to scare liberals. This will make me spend large amounts of $ and my bank account will not be happy.

Heh. I might just do that!!

If they don't want to, I can help out. (they might refuse on the basis that except for Quebec, it is actually illegal to record that information)

I live in Quebec. I can call, register it, and send you the registration certificate. Then deregister it, say I sold it to John Doe in Labrador. That way, you get what you need without having to actually register a gun in your name.

PM if you're interested, I'm up for helping a fellow CGNer out. It'd be paying it forward, someone helped me out once too ;)

Get someone who has access to the FRT database to print off the page for the Valmet Hunter. Will show the non-restricted status for the type and satisfy that very requirement, should you consider it a requirement.
