My new reloading bench video

First of all, as I mentioned in the video the woodworking bench underneath weighs over 400 lbs. The top of the bench is a 3 1/2" thick slab of hardwood so needless to say this is one solid base. As for top material, not much will beat Formica. It's highly abrasion resistant and non porous. If you can get a deal like I did, an ugly color on sale it's the only way to go. Mine is glued down to the plywood. This is a tricky job and needs to be done right.

out of curiosity, how do you properly apply it? i suspect an even layer of glue/epoxy and a roller of sorts.

You need to spend a few bucks on dowels. 3/8" or 1/2" will do. You use contact cement. The strong stuff. Not the low order.
Apply the contact cement to both surfaces. I like to just pour out of the can and spread evenly with a wide plastic puddy knife. You need to wait 15 minutes or so until the contact cement is dry to the touch. Lay the dowels across the surface of the table with a foot spacing. Then lay the Formica over top of the dowels. The dowels keep the 2 pieces apart because once they touch they are stuck. Start at one end and remove the first dowel. Use some type of roller (rolling pin, steel pipe etc) to work the Formica down towards the next dowel. Remove the next dowel and continue. When you are all done you need a router and flush cutting bit to trim off excess Formica. I then run a bevel bit or hand plane to bevel the edge.

Btw, I tried this once without using dowels. "Once".

lol,

good to know! i like the bench, but i'm not sure i like the aluminum edging. i agree with why you have it (brass/bullet stopper, etc) but i suspect it would annoy me. then again if you have your presses mounted it shouldn't be an issue. hmm, alchol induced ramblings!
