I've been looking for a .22 auto-loader that I can make into a freaky accurate range gun. All I want is for it to be on par with my bolt guns and my 17 HMR. Not asking much right?

I chose a Savage 64TR-SR for 2 reasons. It comes with a Boyd's stock and it's made in Canada. Though I have guns from other manufacturers, I have decided to stick with Savage rimfires from now on because their factory is in Canada. Simple as that.

I had it to the range yesterday to test it out and break it in. Went through about 200 rounds in a terrible wind. Never had any failures and seems to function perfectly. It seems like it will be a pretty accurate gun, but with the wind shaking the bench it was pretty hard to tell.

I'm going to do a full review and report in the future. Can't find a whole lot about the gun online so I thought I might as well give my 2 cents worth.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd really like to hear them.

If you're looking for inherent accuracy, you should have gone with a marlin. The 60's and 795's are on par with almost every bolt action ive ever owned. Some are better than others obviously... My current DLX model 60 with a custom pillar bedded stock is more accurate than a CZ 452 scout i owned previously.

If money was no object, you should have got a 10/22 and put a custom barrel in it.

The savage im sure could be made accurate... But freaky accurate is a Marlin, volquartzen, or tuned 10/22.

Anyhow... If you are looking to squeeze every last bit of accuracy out of it I'd suggest (besides good glass) doing a pillar bed, and epoxy/glass bedding job.
 
Good points mikeystew. I already have the 795 and the 10/22. The Marlin is amazingly accurate. The 10/22 is my spray and pray gun. I will look into your other suggestions for sure.

nothing wrong with a 10/22 tack driver.
well..... the price can get up on ya, hehe, but they are accurate.

id be interested to try the savage semi.
i have a savage in bolt and its a dream.
interesting to see if the same accuracy and quality makes it over into their semi's
 
I think I'm bias, I had several 64's but they were lakefield 64's, pretty much the exact same gun and I just never liked the design. The slip fit pinned pencil barrel being the part I liked the least. Maybe the tr-sr has a better barrel than those guns, but I'd be surprised if it shoots better than your 795.
 
I bought a 64fss to replace the 597 I had. Right out of the box the 64 was a superior shooting rifle. At 50 yards using Blazer bulk ammo the 64 kept all shots inside 1.5 inches with a clean barrel. Once the barrel was dirtied up and I got a good feel for the trigger 1 inch groups was the standard. Actually hitting the target was the best I could hope for with the 597.

Must have been something wrong with your 597. Mine is one of the most accurate rifles I own including centerfires. Sub moa at 100 yards all day long if there is little wind. Absolutely smokes my 10/22.

It's a different barrel then the other 64's. I believe it the same one used on the Mark 2 FV-SR bolt gun.
 
Well I have an update on this gun.

I took it to the range tonight and to say I was unimpressed would be an understatement. This is, without a doubt, the worst shooting gun I have ever fired.

I tested it with ammo ranging from bulk Winchester white box to Eley Match Rifle. It looked like I fired 00 Buck at the target. Groups ranged from about 2 to 4 inches. By comparison, my FVSR will put every round in a 1 inch bullseye at 50 yards and often give dime size groups.

The gun is obviously defective and is going back to WSS tomorrow. I was told I had 30 days to return it if there was a problem, for refund or exchange, so I will have to take them up on it.

Maybe a different one would be fine, but I'm not taking another one home with me.

Anyway, take it for what it's worth.
