My new Snowy Mountain Rifle long Range Lightweight hunting rifle.

Fired the first shots from my new Snowy Mountain Rifle in 7PRC. 22" carbon barrel fitted by SMR. We fitted a stock and did the bedding. I wanted a rifle for the longer shots across a valley but also light enough to carry. Maybe even for a trip to Africa. At Shot show this year we visited the SMR booth and purchased two barrelled actions and two blank 30cal barrels that recently arrived. We weighed all components to see where we are at. The first rifle will have a tactical type carbon stock and the second one a more hunting type carbon stock that is a bit lighter. Overall weight of the first bare rifle is at 3010grams or 6.6lb with the stock weighing 847 grams or 29.9oz. Stock has flush cups bottom and sides as well as being set up to take a variety of Arca or Pica rails or swivel stud. With a Hausken suppressor she is very tame to shoot. I only fired 6 shots to have some brass to measure the lands etc so far. The new Schmidt and Bender 6-36x56 is to die for with a huge field of view and for me a very practical illumination which doubles as a red dot/cross at low mag for quick shooting. The low weight of this rifles will make it easy to be used off the shoulder if a deer jumps up. I am still waiting for the proper Spuhr hunting mounts to arrive in the post and just for testing used to tactical mounts that don't fit right on the rear split rail.

I just received the new mounts this afternoon and fitted them. Also put the 3 shot MDT Polymer 3.850 Mag in instead of the heavier AI 5 shot version. With the Hunting type Spuhr mounts the scope is in the correct position for me and mounts are a bit lighter.
Overall weight of rifle with the 6-36x56 fitted and magazine included is at 4160 grams which is 9.15lb

Yes you are right, not as light as it could be but light for what it is supposed to do.
I could have saved a few oz with a Titanium action but looked at stiffness coefficient of titanium vs steel and went steel. The scope is hefty but just has incredible optics, which will be nice to have year round in bad misty weather on our west coast. The sister of this rifle will be exactly the same barrelled action but will have a more hunting orientated stock, also fully adjustable but around 3.5oz lighter, will get a Meta 3-18x42 scope which will around 8.5oz lighter as well as slightly lighter mounts. So overall maybe 0.8lb lighter. My son and I will be hunting with these. They should be capable of taking deer off-hand when they jump up in front of us and have one look back... or be good for 600m deer across a valley in plantations. Hopefully also a trip to Namibia next year all going well. I have sold few of my hunting rifles and will try out a few new rifles. A friend in Germany is just building a 300WSM for us on his 3 lug action and using a light proof carbon barrel. We will finish the build our selves.

Few shots on target trying Berger and Hornady after zero with new mounts. Only needed one shot for that. First three shot group with this rifle was bottom right, second with Berger top left, then top right last three again Hornady. Shot at 103m. For the first groups I am very happy.

With boats, only not allowed if the boat is under power. Boat stopped is ok to shoot from. Never looked at car issue. Especially if one is not inside.
All going well I might have go into our hills tomorrow, our season is open for male Sika deer.

Purdy, and purdy slick too. Congrats!

That bolt, I see two locking lugs. I is a 90 degree throw? With that short handle, it doesn't interfere with the scope?

Never measured the throw of the bolt or looked it up, seems similar to a Tikka which is 70deg. No problems with the scope at all and it is a big scope. The bolt knob is quite small compared to the ones I make for my other rifles but works fine and I quite like it.
