My new Tikka T3 Hunter 30-06 100 yard group

My tikka shoots very well with federal fusion in 165 and 180 grain. Try that stuff, its a great bullet at a good price. Even the cheap winchester from wallmart gives me 1" groups at 100y. I'd strongly recommend getting rid of the lead sled.

My Tikka 30-06 also shot Federal fusion very very well

This is a great kit for the price. It includes almost everything you'll need except for the dies and bullet components. It would be worthwhile to source another quick change bushing so you won't have to swap it between your dies. I recommend purchasing a case length guide and shell holder from Lee (http://leeprecision.com/gage-holder-30-06-sprfld.html) then you can use it with the locking stud and cutter head and a drill to trim your cases much faster (really cheap upgrade). You'll also eventually want to upgrade to a nice digital scale at some point! Possibly one like this! (http://www.rcbs.com/Products/Powder...s/Electronic/ChargeMaster™-Combo-120-VAC.aspx).

All in all the 50th anniversary kit is a nice way to start out

Wow. I never would have guessed a 12"+ drop in 100+ to 300 yards. That complicates things big time. I wish I had a range finder, or one to use for a few days to try and get better at guesstimating.
It's interesting when you go to a Football game the 110 yard field looks like it's half a mile long, and when you walk out 100 yards it seems more like 200' or so. Odd.

How much does shooting downhill or up hill effect trajectory? With shooting a .22 for 25+ years I know it's a factor. I feel like I need a line of credit again to have everything I need to go hunting.

Speaking of spending more $. Can anyone advise me on the 50th anniversary Lee Kit. Looks like I might grab that when I can afford it. All I'll need is Dies, then the bullets, primer, powder. And the other dozen things I don't know about, like 'lube'?

I zero at 200 yards. if you hand load a 150 grain bulllet up to 3000 fps, with a 200 yard zero you should have a mean point blank range of around 260 yards. That means from 0 to 260 yards your bullet will be within 3 inches of your cross hairs out to 260 yards. That's perfectly acceptable for hunting.

Thanks guys, very helpful. I hope I can start loading some here in the next couple weeks and get to know this rifle a lot better.

I own 2 different tikkas. One being the t3 lite 30-06. I wouldn't be too worried about what one box of bullets did on paper. Many different choices out there. What I do reccomend is putting a sims limbsaver recoil pad on. The ones from factory don't give you any favours, especially Being a new hunter with a new 30-06. They tame recoil a fair amount, you will appreciate it.

Also I noticed that tikkas take about 50-75 rounds from new to get good and broke in. Groups will get better.Perhaps you just get used to the rifle more, and it teaches you to shoot better.

As for a hunting round I'd reccomend accubonds by nosler. They have the white plastic tip. Damn near anything 150-180 gr will topple moose with a good rested shot. Doesn't have to be premium bullets. However I have shot a large cow elk this month with 165 accubonds (reloads) and they worked great. Two hits at 257 yds and found elk ~40 yds later. Made me re-think reason for why I was needing a 300 mag as a second rifle.

If you can, go to the range with someone who shot a fair amount. They may be able to help you out with how to shoot the rifle or point out any little thing that may be causing some grief.

reloading will make you a better shot, as you will likely want to shoot more. For powder is pick up IMr 4064 for 150 grain bullets, and h4350 or IMR4350 for 165 and 180 gr stuff.

Not sure why but my Tikkas seem to shoot best with near max or max powder charges. As always work up a load from manual to see what your gun does first and signs of pressure etc.

Hornady 180gr interlock factory loads always shot well in my T3. When you start loading 168gr ttsx in front of a max load imr4064 shot amazing and will kill anything you shoot with it.

Awesome, I was looking at the Nosler ammo and wondering about powder. I wish I had started this a little earlier but I still have a month. Not entirely sure I'll be able to reload ammo I will trust to hunt with and I'm even considering putting reloading off. Partially cause I'm going to end up in the poor-house by the time I get to hunting.
I noticed Cabela's is sold out of Nosler ammo and I'm wondering if I'll be able to get my hands on some. I'm guessing it will cost me at least $250 to get started reloading with that $160 Lee kit.
In the meantime I'm not shooting cause I don't want to buy ammo until I make up my mind which route I'm going in,
Sigh
Thanks a lot for the replies!

When I started shooting my T3 30-06 I was not impressed, until I tightened the action screws, it shoots better than I can. And get a limbsaver recoil pad, you'll be glad you did.

If you're reloading, IMR 4350 and IMR 4064 are excellent with the 30-06. I have a 165 gr Scirocco load with 49 gr IMR 4064 that groups 1/2" @ 2850fps and a 165 gr Sierra BT with IMR 4350 @ 2900 fps (I can't recall the charge weight right now) that also groups 1/2". I've seen 180 gr bullets with IMR 4350 that shoot well. 30-06 is easy to load. Have fun with it!
