My New (To Me) Remington 597

One of the best $180 I ever spent on the EE was for my Rem 597.
I sold my two 10/22's after the first range trip out with the 597 and never looked back.
Highly recommend the Tech Sights iron sight upgrade for around $70. You will be amazed at the accuracy. See here:

They are extremely accurate, reliable and dirt cheap. Plus it's designed like a standard normal semi auto in that the bolt stays back once the mag is empty (crazy concept) Aftermarket mags for the 597 are pretty much junk. Stick to the $20 factory 10 rounders and you will have zero issues.
Here is the thing about the 597, if you like to actually shoot a stock config rifle very accurately for very little money, then you found what you're looking for.
If you have to dress up your .22 in 7 pounds of useless plastic and shooting = dumping 500 rounds of .22 LR into a dirt berm as fast as you can then look elsewhere.

I agree, tech sights are an excellent upgrade, I have them on my 1022, 597, and my wife on her 795, nothing like a nice light, well balanced 22 with great sights. Don't understand all the crapping on 1022s, mine runs 100 percent with the rotary mags and you'd never be able to tell my targets apart from travis bickles. Anyone that claims you need to sink 1000+ to make one function and shoot, well they're just making it easy for you to see how much their opinions and advice are worth IMO. I guess I did buy a hogue stock, tech sights and a 40$ PC hammer, although the 597 needed them too as it had inferior stock sights, trigger and could use a better stock aswell.

John (johnnyc14) makes excellent bolt handles. I have two, on both my 597's. Wholeheartedly recommend the bolt handles.
I have not had issues with the spring yet, so cannot comment on the bolt mod he does.

Thanks again for the input everyone. I have disassembled and cleaned the whole rifle. I also cleaned up the barrel and put a nice new coating on it so there hopefully wont be any more rust. I have a couple mags on order and hole to make it to the range with it in the new year.

I have a few thousand rounds through my 597 with one very minor failure. The bolt hold open spring failed. Changed it out, good to go since. I polished the guide rails after about 2000 rounds because I was working out of town and I was bored one rainy evening.

Both 597’s in my House shoot fantastic. My hunting partner did some research on them and figured he wanted to try one. Then he found out that my son and I each have one and my hunting partner just said screw it and bought one. 50 yards and I can run the magazine into a quarter.

I haven’t had any problems with my 10/22’s, I just think the 597 is better.

Got a biddy to grab me a magazine from Cabelas today. So far i can only confortably fit 9 rounds in it.... Going to the range next weekend to see how this puppy shoots, keeping my fingers crossed.

Definitely contact johnnyc14 about his billet charging handle; the factory part is a sloppy piece of crap.

To clean up the trigger some go for the Volquartsen target hammer (if you do, make sure to install their extractor also), yet I found the best improvement was with the MCARBO trigger spring kit:

My HB is a far more enjoyable shooter with just those upgrades (and it was not so bad right out of the box).

Don't force them. If you can only fit 9 in right now, don't worry about it. They are tight when they are new. Go through the magazine a few times and it will wear in enough and 10 round will fit in no time.

If it was only happening with one of the brands, I'd suspect the ammo first. What kind of ammo was it that was misfiring?

Can you post a picture of the firing pin strike mark on some of the rounds that misfired. My 597 used to misfire on some brands of rounds due to light strikes. I found that the firing pin needs to protrude about .035" to .040" from the bolt when the hammer hits it in order to reliably fire all brands of bullets. I had to make a modification to my bolt so I could get that much protrusion. I was only getting about .020" when it was new.

Another range day in the books. My wife even shot it for the first time ever and loved it. This thing loved cci mini mag rounds. Still had about 1/20 fail to fire but thats a lot better than last time. That pretty much solidifies this rifle into my family now that she is shooting it too. Now, time to pick what camo I want to dip the stock in..... lol

I just put new low Leupold rings and a Cabela's 3x9x40 22lr scope on mine today
One trick mine will do is with no mag in gun you hold level to the ground with top scope side down, bolt will hold open
Hold gun proper shooting position.. bolt won't hold open with out a mag
try it

The spring that retains donward tension on the bolt catch arm can get easily bent during routine cleaning if you're not careful.
If you strip it next time for cleaning just take the bolt catch apart and give the spring an extra bend to put more tension on it.
It will stay down even with the rifle upside down, no mag and racking the action.

Mine is on my never sell list. It's ungodly accurate and mine eats literally anything I put in it. I have never had a single stoppage and I've put thousands of rounds through it by now. She is going to need some new springs soon lol Until I see a need though she will just keep going.

How were you able to do a modification? I am interested to see if I can do it myself or need a smithy to do it for me, lol.

I've had the .22mag ( bull barrel , laminated stock ) for a few years now with no issues other than I cant shoot it enough !
It shoots great and is my go - too rifle when out for a run through the bush.
Anybody who has shot my rifle , fell in love with it..
They can be abit of a pain putting back together after cleaning but I've seen far more complicated semi's.
