My new toy, impractical AR haters beware (new pics added)

Are you kidding? What is impractical about that? To me, that is a 100% practical minimal rifle. I love the concept too: put a rifle in the smallest, handiest, most ergonomical package you can - and stuff like this results! If I were in the urban variety of the brown stuff I would LOVE a rifle like that.

The only gripe I might have would be the magnifier. Is that beast accurate enough to justify it, CR5? If so I might consider a true scope instead - but that is just me picking the fly chit out of the pepper. Any gun you make like this has to be tailored to its user and if it makes you a better shot then you really have no choice. I would love to see a range report that would include accuracy testing off the bench if you are so inclined.

An accuracy test with multiple ammo types will be coming next chance I get to go to the range.
The only thing the short barrel should give up is velocity, accuracy should be pretty good under 100yds.
As for the magnifier, I don't really need it or plan to use it much but since I have it I may as well try it out. It's only a 3x mag so it just helps me be a little more precise. I will probably use it when I do the accuracy test and I'll probably do that at 50yds instead of my usual 100yds.

Practicality is the same as any other AR I guess since they are all range toys. It's almost too short though as it's kinda hard to get a grip on without having my fingers end up on the gas block. It's fun though, another couple range trips and I'll know if I'm gonna keep it or not.

I have something you NEED for that little toy. It makes the muzzle signature a bit more ...... prominent ... to other range users. :D I was seriously worried about setting myself on fire the first time I tried it.

PM me how to get that for my DD

^^^^ that is SICK!

wow, thats freakin awesome.

Thanks,
Credit goes out to Suputin, he gave me a great deal on the barrel.

I also mounted up a 2-7 Burris in a quick detach mount to do the accuracy testing.
I discovered last night that I need to add feed ramps to the receiver, was jamming when using my LAR mag. Seems ok with pmags though. Won't take long and she'll be cycling perfectly.

I cut the feed ramps into the upper to match the feed ramps in the barrel and now she cycles perfectly.
Put in a Spikes heavy buffer and it's fairly smooth. Still a little harsh but much better.

I made a sub 2 moa group with it using Black Hills 77gr match at 100yds which was a real surprise :)

Chrony?

It would be a fun toy, but does it have trouble stabilizing rounds?

Not yet, I didn't have the chrony with me last time I had it out. It's a 1:7 though so shouldn't be too bad. I'm never going to be shooting it long range so I'm not going to worry about it. It's doing sub 2 moa at 100yds and that's good enough for me with a 6.5 inch barrel.

When he says impractical, I believe he's referring to short barrel .223 terminal ballistics. Lots of info over at ar15.com on the subject, but basically most sub guns/hand guns have better terminal effects than a 7.5" barrel .223.
All a moot point here in canada anyways...

Yep, just a warning to all the guys that go on and on about it not having terminal performance due to the loss of velocity. I don't know about you but I still wouldn't want to get hit by it and so far it's killed every piece of paper I've shot with it.
People get way too caught up with stupid stuff on here. If I was going to war this would not be my tool of choice. If I was going to war I would be issued a rifle not be taking my own. Since I'm not going to war this is just another fun toy in the collection.
If I was going into battle with one of my own rifles it would be with either my PWS 12 inch or my PWS 9.75 inch 300 Blackout (if I had a steady supply of ammo). Might even consider my non restricted ACR but parts support for that could become a problem so I'd probably stick to an AR.

Boomer,
The pic of the fireball isn't from my rifle. Mine does make a nice 18-24 inch fireball from the muzzle but only with certain types of ammo, some ammo only makes a small fireball ;)
