Sometimes it's nice to see one that hasn't had the barrel chopped and a Numrich kit added to make a fake trench gun.

Chamber should be 2-3/4, so do keep 3-inch rounds away from it. It WILL eat them but it will give itself an awful case of indigestion in doing so. This can wreck a barrel and they not cheap these days. I believe as well that some of the early ones were chambered for the 2-9/16, so checking the chamber is important. Chamber depth usually is marked on the barrel, anyway.

Lovely old Toy!

These Winchester Model 1897s are very handsome shotguns....congratulations.
That is where the M97 trench guns and riot guns came from.

Watch out for the 1st knuckle of your thumb that grips the wrist. Get complacent and it'll bite it.
I've a later model take down, they are very cool guns.
Lower the hammer to the fired position and gently apply forward pressure to the forward grip...that faint little 'click' and it's unlocked and ready to cycle.
Really though...what is the purpose of the large button on the rear of the receiver on the right hand side?

.
Years ago I bought a model 97 riot gun that had been used by the Security people at Ford. It had an aluminum buttplate with the Ford emblem on it.

You can really put out a lot of lead if you keep the trigger back while you pump it, as it has no disconnector as more modern shotguns have.

Yeah i would like a riot model but hard to find :( and yes this one can slam fire, and i think the front button is to eject shells in tube, but unsure what rear one does

Ohh ok, so what should i do for ammo, i was told it was 2 3/4" however lots of forums have back and forths saying its ok to shoot, and some say get it lenghtend? Any thoughts?
