My new XT-22 MVSR (With pictures)

I just got my new Marlin XT-22 MVSR .22 WMR in the mail today. As an added bonus, the rings and scope were here too (It was three separate shipments), so I could put it all together.

I didn't think I was a stainless steel guy until I got my hands on this one. I might not go back to blued guns. :D

Included in the box was one four and one seven round magazine, as well as the scope mounts. It has a varmint style heavy barrel. It came with a user manual, a cable lock, as well as an NRA application form, and a message (pamphlet) from Chuck Norris encouraging the new owner to be sure to vote for gun friendly candidates.

I got a Weaver Classic K Series 2.5-7x28 scope for it. I figured with such a small objective lens, I could use low rings. I was hoping it would be enough clearance. Let's see if I can lift the bolt:

So far so good. But can I pull it out?

Winning! There is not a lot of clearance - maybe an eighth of an inch, but it works well, so that's good enough for me:

It's a bit of an optical illusion there - the clearance is consistent all the way along the bolt. I am happy with the height of the scope. My cheek weld is very good, and I feel generally very comfortable on the gun.

So far, by visual inspection, I am happy with the new gun. I just hope it shoots as good as it looks.

I know Marlin had some quality control issues when Remington bought them out, but I have to say that both of these guns are keepers. I am very pleased with both of them.

As an aside, the scope rails came installed from the factory. Will it be necessary to remove them and loctite the screws, or not?

Anyway, I will try to do a range report some time this weekend. It's going to kill me to have to wait until then to be able to sight it in and shoot it!
 
got mine last year and it shoots better than my ability will allow. no problems on yotes out to 100 yards with hornady V Maxs
 
Nice rifle. I have an xt17vr. make sure to check that the bases are correct. marlin shipped a bunch of xt's with bases that are barely compatable with weaver rings. weaver no 12's fit and you need 2. For the 9 bucks the new bases cost I didn't bother to contact Marlin. Also the bases on my gun were sloppy loose. since the replacement, my gun groups have shrunk to 1/4 the size they were, And I am not a great shooter.

I had the same problem with mine, had to switch them out with #12 weaver bases

Did the new bases make a good difference for you?. I shot the best group I have ever shot with any rifle with my xt17 on sunday with the new bases. It was about 1/2 inch at 100. My wife said I couldn't put the beer can on the fridge. With the new bases I am totaly happy with my gun. I would buy it again even knowing that the bases were going in the can.

I havent even shot mine yet, but my weaver grand slam rings would not clamp to the original bases, you could tighten them down and still yank the rings off the bases. My bases where also loose from the factory I would recomend the OP remove his, loc-tight and re-tourque them.
 
I contacted Marlin about my bases, they would not do anything. They said the bases where made by WARNE and if I wanted to mount a scope I would have to buy thier rings. We definatly do not live in an age of customer service Warne must have been the cheapest place for marlin to get the bases.

Also as far as I know Weaver does not offer thier #12 in silver only in black.
 
Thanks for the info guys. From what I can tell, the bases I received with the gun are suitable. I have tightened my rings, and they seem to be secure. When I get some real trigger time on the gun I will know if there are any problems.

I have it bore sighted now; I am going to try to shoot it this Saturday. The wait is killing me. :D

You guys are killing me! I have to wait til tomorrow to see how my gun does. :D

I have a box of Hornady 30g V-Max, and a box of Remington 33g Accutip-V. I am hoping one (or both) will be as accurate as what I have been reading. It is the funniest thing though - some Marlins will shoot the former reaily well, but not the latter, whereas others will shoot the latter really well, but not the former. I am hoping for both!

Got the same gun but in a wood stock and its a sweeeeeeet gun. It is one of the few guns in my safe I will never sell. FYI, Remington manufactures marlin now, just be wary about the quality control on the newer marlins.

Yeah, I think I have run into an issue with the new one. The dovetail on the recoil lug is loose - as in I can slide it out by hand, and there is some play. Having read what warranty work is like here in Canada for gun owners (i.e., waiting for a long time for something that may or may not be fixed), I am considering my options. I was thinking about taking the gun into a machine shop and having a new recoil lug made.

Don't worry, that is that normal, I have a genuine marlin xt-22M and the recoil lug is very loose too.
 
Range Report

I promised a range report, so here goes.

After I sighted in, I pulled back to 115 yards to see what the rifle could do. I shot prone position with a bag under the front. The targets are 100 yard small bore targets, with the center ring being 1" in diameter.

5 shot group 33g Remington Accutip-V:

A second five round group at the same distance, again with the Remington 33g:

Finally, a five round group, this time with Hornady 30g V-Max:

The good: I liked that the POI did not change much between the different weight ammo.
The bad: The groups are not nearly as tight as I was hoping for. Heck, I can shoot the exact same groups with my XT-22 TR, which has Tech Sights.
The ugly: The jury is still out on this.

I am now at the point where I want to start eliminating potential problems. I am thinking the scope is the place to start. I had assumed that my bases were OK (I know, I know, but hear me out...), because I could get the scope tight enough that it did not move. The truth is that I don't know what Warne bases look like, so I figured since mine were not as loose as others described (above) I maybe got lucky. Now I am suspicious. Here are my bases:

Do Weaver bases have flat sides like those (i.e., where the rings come in contact with them), or do they come right to a point?
 
Thanks to all of you who have suggested I might have the wrong bases for the rings I have, and especially to xenasdad and RadMan for confirming it. I will pick up some new bases, and hopefully be able to put up some better groups.

Awesome. When I first got mine it was like yours, good but not amazing. The 9.00 I spent on new bases was the best cash I ever spent. The groups closed right up. I had to put weaver grand slam high rings on to clear the scope bell, I had then from another build in a box so it was nothing..
