Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd share some pics of my newest addition...I apologize in advance for my poor camera skills. It looks nicer in person.
What it is: 1895 Flatside 30-40 Krag, manufactured in 1896, with Pistol Grip, Shotgun buttplate, Lyman 21 receiver sight, and 22" barrel. The bore is excellent, so I'm looking forward to doing a little shooting with it too, though I haven't heard much good about the cartridge. Great feeling little gun, and I'm very happy to have found it. It's a New Brunswick gun that I have a feeling put a lot of meat on the table.

The gun has braze job done to the rear sight, a chip out of the buttstock near the upper tang, and some light sanding on the oil-rubbed buttstock, but I'm very happy with it!

Nice

The Krag bites, won't kill a thing. Send it to me.......:)

Nice rifle, looks to be in great shape. I've never seen a pistol grip on a '95. Don't see a Flat-side everyday either.

The 30-40 is kinda like an American 303Brit............. so it'll kill some stuff.:)

Sounds good...flip me your addy, and I'll send it on it's way. Got 2 complimentary boxes of old ammo to go with it for yah! ;)

Yeah, it's in pretty good shape considering it's 112 years old. The bore is incredible. I didn't know it was similar to the 303BR, if that's the case, it'll get'er done! I just found out that they were originally made for the 220 grain bullets, and that reloading for that is the way to go. Likley give that a try.

Nope, don't see too many Flatsides, and one with a Pistol Grip, Shotgun buttplate, and 22"barrel, is a rare bird. The 1895s were only made with curved PGs in the Flatsides, so within the first 5,000 guns or so, but 3 have been ID'd in second model guns. According to George Madis' numbers on the 1895, only 1 in each 2600 had a special shorter barrel, 1 in 1400 had a pistol grip, and only 1 in every 1600 had a special buttplate. Do the math (I cannot, my stats course is ancient history now :) ), and that adds up to a rare gun. Pretty happy to have found it.

The one thing that i would do is get an original sight insert for the rear sight and just use the peep sight. It will clean up the look of the gun so you wont have to look at the brazing. The 30-40 krag is a great round and yes it was originally loaded with 220 gr bullets. I have reloaded my 95 so it shoots about an inch at a 100yards. The round is fairly accuarte anyways but most ammo these days that you buy is by winchester and loaded with 180 gr. Basically the modern ammo that is loaded by winchester both the 30-40 Krag and the .303 are identical. Mine favours a 220 Nosler with IMR 4350. Several nice black bears have been dropped with this load and more then one deer.

Thanks, that's good advice. I was actually looking down the barrel tonight, and was thinking the same thing...the rear sight just sort of gets in the way too I find. I'll have to keep eyes open for a blank on EBay...see them on there from time to time.
I just picked up a nice 38-55 a few weeks back, that I was planning on hunting with this fall...now I'm not so sure  Could be a worse dilamma I guess.
A 220 grain nosler eh? What kind of velocity do you get with that load, and how well does it carry out?
Matt

I have never actually checked the velocity of the load but i figure it to be roughly to be a little over 2000ft per sec ( 28 inch barrel) but i would have to check that. Its not a hard cartridge to reload for. Its good out past 200 but i just use it for under 150 since for the longer shots i have other rifles. Heck i love my old 38-55's to so i would say take both and have fun.

Thanks Carew. That's good to know, but I guess I'll have to take into consideration that mine only has a 22" barrel.
Good advice. Maybe I will take both guns out this fall!!

Well, that's because you just haven't collected long enough Matt! You've got my addy already, let me know when you drop it in the mail!

I know the problem ..... too many old Winchesters, not enough hunting opportunities for all of them.:) It's a good problem to have.

Ya know, kind of funny, I just put a newer Browning 1895 on layaway today, just cause I don;'t have any other levers than 99's. :D Rifle just felt good to the shoulder. Les

Nice choice. I've never had one in my hands, but I imagine they are a very nice gun. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on it once it arrives. What caliber?

Kirk: I may try to pick up a set of 32-40 and 30-40 dies, and gear, before the next visit. Hopefully next time around we can spend less time developing loads and have more time to shoot! Got some good load info here for the 30-40, and Harry emailed me oodles of load data for the 32-40.

Coldiron: it'll be in the mail tomorrow morning...if you don't mind, I'll throw in a couple boxes of original ammo too!

Matt

Thanks. Still drooling over it:) Lucky find for me.

Coldiron: I've actually put a hold on delivery of the gun, until the check arrives:) Hope you understand :dancingbanana:
