Hi all,
I managed to find a « new in box»; yes you read right: brand new in its original box, with papers and all in its factory packing grease, Remington 40X in .22lr.
The rifle was bought more than 40 years ago by a collector and was kept, unfired in a humidity controlled room. This is the « R » model that was a later version of the famous 40X, sitting in a prone stock. here are a few pics of the beast, as I received it. I have not cleaned it yet so you will see smudges and grease on pics.
I intend to properly scope it and try to shoot it with the original stock first but I think that for serious bench rest, I will put a Jewel trigger and put all in a true BR stock in a near future. You will notice that the barrell is shorter than the usual 40X's. This barrell is 24 inches.

Snider Shooter; I also thin the stock looks quite good. I will see how it goes for BR. It has an Anschutz rail and I might try it with an MPOD bipod.

Glenn: Thanks. I'll let you know how it shoots.

Very nice, I'd use it as is, I think you will find it surprisingly good without any mods. Try a few different types of ammo to see what it likes best.

Me thinks you won't be happy until it looks more like this . . .

I tried to read the barrel code as to when it was actually manufactured but what it appeared to be is not within the codes.

A friend offered me a similar rifle for $1000 but It would not produce accuracy to the level he claimed. Efforts to clean the bore did not produce results either and he got his rifle back cleaner than he delivered to me. He eventually sold the rifle for $850 but the new owner is not bragging nor has he brought it out for BR50 or 100 Meter Rimfire.

Accuracy is in the results. What have you got for ammo?

Update:

I have given the bore a good session of scrubbing with a bronze brush and patching using mainly MPRO 7. I did not useRimfire Blend as it should not be leaded. Lots of gunk that came out. I left it with a couple of patches soaked in ballistol. Before I shoot I will dry patch. I have also cleaned the whole rifle: action, bolt etc. I took the barrelled action out of the stock to coat everything with ballistol as I do once a year with all my rifles. I have a few nice rimfire rifles ( Anschutz 54, Win 52 etc ) I will submit this new 40X to the usual ammo testing routine ( Eley match and Tenex, Lapua Center X and Midas plus etc ) to determne its preferred food. I do expect a few shooting sessions and cleanings before the barrell settles though. I think I will follow everyone's advise and leave the rifle as is. I will put a Weaver T36 on top and shoot it...
I won't get the chance to shoot it for a couple of weeks but when I do, I will let you know how it does. Also, I will take pics of box and papers tomorrow and put them up here.

Thanks all for sharing my excitement

Horseman: I have a dedicated BR-50 rifle: An Anschutz 54.30. For this Rem I think I will try to shoot it as is before turning it into a true BR rifle. That is if I ever do it.

Thanks guys for all your nice comments. Reading you all convinced me to leave the rifle as is. I don't have much time for range sessions thesedays. I should be able to feed you all with a first range report around Christmas time.
