Nice find Gillis got to love the 40x Remingtons
I was able to pick-up a older 40x on a 722 action 1056 vintage I did what you where thinking of doing jewel & Benchrest stock,I have oiled and put away original trigger parts & stock.
it shoots considerable better than when original,' trigger 2 oz makes a difference and I am sure bedding it helps as well.

The wood in the stock has very unusual looking grain if walnut. Could it perhaps be beech?

Great find to grab one new in the box like that!
Have fun with it. I had mine exported from the US. A 1965 version. Original owner fired a few hundred rounds and then it sat in his safe until I got it.
Mine will need a bedding job.
