My nice new rifle is scarred

My beautiful new Norinco M14 in USGI glass stock pristine as she is, the gas piston started to stick so I pushed in & turned the gas valve (to loosen the crud) and it broke off one half of the cotter pin.

So I had to replace it.

In the process I managed to scratch the finish around the pin (opposite the valve) whilst turning it. and also put a small scratch in gas system while driving in the new pin.

When I look at the valve spindle it would appear that there isn't enough room to push in, and turn it, without bending/ breaking the pin.

Is this common on the Norcs? Perhaps they never expected us to try an launch grenades!

Is there a way to touch up the finish?

Cheers,

Jeff

Don't use bluing (at least not my old standby, Birchwood Casey Superblue), it seems to react with the parkerizing and produce an obviously too black of finish. I filed down my front sight and reblued it. That's how I know. Very black, like soot.

Title changed from "scared" to "scarred".

Unless of course the rifle is actually too scared to be around you now, in which case I can change it back.;)

Yeah stay away from the superblue like he suggested, man that stuf gets black, and with very few coats as well. Not that soot Black isnt nice, its my favorite brand, but not on a parkerized firearm.
It really hates any little bit of different finnish or blueing as well, the steel needs to be clean as a babies bottom in order to come out half decent.

Gunslick Brand Gun Blue might be a bit better, I don't find it gets so dark.

I managed to turn my valve without breaking the pin, although I have only tried it once. It seemed to push in slightly (the screw), very slightly and then turn.

I'm sorry, are you showing the rifle or shooting it??

TDC
