My Norcfield M14 rifle range report

Went back a couple of weekends ago to the range with 50 rounds of ammo loaded with IMR 3031 and Hornady 168 grain match bullets.
Norinco M14S with Springfield (SAI) medium weight take off barrel and Springfield (SAI) bolt, USGI gas system, original Norc Op Rod and Trigger assm.Bushnell 8-32 power scope. M14.CA casm mount and Blackfeather stock.
(Big thanks to Barney/Tactical teacher for selling me the barrel and the bolt plus barrel install. Had a great time visiting with him)
First target was 1.220, 1.219, .813, .832, and 1.257. Average 1.068
Second target was 1.048, 1.083, 1.207, .904, and .819. Average 1.012.

Seem to have hit the right combination...even likes the same load as my Sprinfield loaded!

What distance where your targets fired at?
Next time you want to try some loads, may I suggest using the same bullet on top of 41 grns of 4064? I think you might find tighter groups with that powder. 3031 is a great powder for bolt gun loads in .308 but gives somewhat varied performance with M-14's.

Great shooting otherwise, the rifle looks terrific.

Just out of curiosity, how do you find the cheek weld on the stock? I just ordered a black feather, I was going to use a CTR stock with a riser, but that stock just suits that chassis!

The targets are at 100 yards. I hear good things about the 4064, going to have to get some, sounds like a tried and true favorite for many years. Still want to try some lighter bullets but having trouble still sourcing anything that I am willing to shoot for the price of the Hornady match.

I found that after a while I got used to the cheek weld but I was looking for something that will raise it 1/2 inch or more and it would be great. I had found a company about a year ago but once I shot the rifle as is it didn't seem to be enogh of an issue to bother with. Now that you mention it though I should look into it again!

That is some nice shooting. Glad it all came together for you.
Your making it look toooo easy now :)

This sort of shooting goes beyond the gun and shows a high degree of proficiency in your skill, especially with this platform.
Heading down the range myself in about an hour with 100 rds of 168 goodness and hoping to pull it off today.
I have the load that can do it..........can I ?
Also working up a 150 gr plinking load, looking to keep it under 2moa.

IMR3031 was the original propellant for US Army 7.62 match ammo and still does right well as you have shown. It's fun to experiment with it and IMR4064, IMR4895 and H4895 just to see what happens. But you should be pretty happy with your results.
 
Rodney's rifle is the real deal. One thing that makes me kinda envious (besides the consistency) is the fact that it shoots well from a cold bore with no stringing or POI shift during warm-up.

Damn you Rodney, I was pretty happy with how my Standard barreled rifle was shooting now I'm gonna have to spend more money and it might not even turn out as well.

Hey Paul,
I honestly think the Norincos M14S/M305s are a great rifle, the only thing is the barrels are too light/soft whatever. I wouldn't have even changed the bolt but the springfield barrel and Norinco bolt combo had a looong headspace. I think Casey has more barrels. The Kreiger medium barrelI picked up from him this week sure looks purddy!!! And since they are short chambered will work with the norinco bolt as casey will have to finish ream it anyway.

Very nice man, all you have to do now is try some different recipes, but you might have trouble beating those groups. I bet you that rifle would shoot 1.5 or lower all day with Federal blue box 150g

One thing I'd recommend if you get time with Barney again, see if you can't polish the contact parts of the trigger assembly. You have to be careful with some sections, but some parts it's as simple as taking off the bluing. I wasn't comfortable doing this myself, but I met up with Thomas and he made sure I didn't compromise the contact points of the sears etc. This took all of like 60 minutes to do and had the most noticeable impact on the 'feel' of the rifle, made it appear less clunky, probably shoots better also but I did so many mods at once there's no way for me to put a finger on it hyuk

I was lucky with the original trigger on this one, just had to do the polishing with the compound like Barney says and made a very nice trigger pull. I think I spent about half an hour working the trigger with it out of the rifle and only pinched my finger once! I used the inletting blue to see when I had even contact on both surfaces.
