Hello all,

Here's my first ever gun, a Norinco HP9-1 (870 clone). 18.5" barrel with bead sight. Got a good price from SFRC Ammo Source, as well as some S&J Hardware Accessories. I chose the Norinco because I am not mechanically skilled at all, have no experience with working on guns, and I'd rather make mistakes on a Norinco than a Wingmaster. Here are a few pictures of what I've done to it so far. I'd like to use it as a camp/bear defence/truck gun, as well as just having fun in general.

As it first arrived.

Getting cleaned. Lots of shipping grease!

Jumbo safety installed. I used bright red enamel to paint the groove on the other side. "Red is Dead!"

No-Jam Follower installed. Seems like a really well built piece of kit.

I'll update this thread as I continue to add to it. Future plans including a 4-shell sidesaddle shell holder, some kind of light mount with pressure switch, sling setup and new stock. I'm torn between getting a Hogue overmolded stock or getting some older Wingmaster or Police wood stock off Ebay.

Thanks for looking!

Looks good!

I love 12g shottys :D

If you are interested in a wood stock, I have a beautiful one off my 870 Wingmaster. The stock and fore-end are in excellent shape. I went with an ATI 6-position M4 style and ATI fore-end instead...never really cared for wood.

Shoot me a PM :)

Next time you clean the grease off a gun try spray brake cleaner, way better than G96 IMHO. Great gun, I have one myself and love it, fun toy. The barrel is just on its way back from getting threaded for screw in chokes. Now for some ghost rings. These things are just as bad as 10/22'scp:

Once your change the stock, your HP9 will become a lot ligher.

Is that where the weight comes from on these things? I couldn't believe the weight the last time I picked one up. I am used to 870's and these are at least a pound heavier. If I replace the stock with a Hogue will I be closer in weight to a regular 870? Any info is appreciated,

Patrick

The weight is in the receiver, it's solid steel not the alloy that Remington uses. Synthetic stocks all weigh about the same, the stock HP-9 one is about average so you won't lose much going with a Hogue. Wood might be a little lighter but not a huge amount. Steel vs alloy. Light weight vs indestructability.

Remington 870 receivers are not alloy, they are solid steel. The trigger groups are made of polymer, is that what you mean? And there can be a tremendous difference in weight between synthetic stocks.

what's the deal with the no jam follower? I've never seen one of those before. Are the norinco's known for jamming? I just opted to grab an 870 express over the norinco as I got one for only $100 more. Just wondering how the norinco holds up.

I stand corrected, they are steel. I do have a HP-9 stock and a Hogue though and they are 1.2 oz's different with the Hogue being the heavier. My Knoxx is quite a bit heavier than either of the others but as it is on the gun right now I can't weigh it to see how much. The synthetic from my 11-87 weighs .1oz less than the HP-9 one. The big difference is in the recoil pads.

I could have sworn that the older 870 Wingmaster that I sold a couple of years ago was alloy as it had two nice gouges in the reciever that never rusted and got put in there rather easily. I guess I just assumed it was alloy and never really checked. I do know it was lighter than the HP-9 by a quite a bit, I wonder why?

It's more about using an overbuilt component for peace of mind. The OEM mag follower was somewhat flimsy in parts, you could actually bend the plastic with enough force and distort the mag follower. The no jam follower is made out of (to the best of my knowledge) a super hard plastic material called Delrin which can actually be machined. It's much stronger, and as a plastic, it won't rust or retain moisture like a metal component might.

It's only a couple of bucks, so you really can't go wrong with it.
