My Norinco Type 97 Shorty - Range Report Post # 80!!!!

Can someone with a type97 kind enough to do a " drawing" of the lower receiver-magazine well with the critcal dimensions done with a caliper? including the location of the magazine button, height of the mag release button when depressed and non-depressed?

Not really. But there is no way the bullpup (in this generation) could ever be as fast to reload. The controls are terrible.

But we can see the modders in us are working on that.

Sorry Greentips I don't have a caliper....I posted detailed pics on CanAm's dealer thread...If you want specs I have a measuring tape...but please PM me with details if you want some rough measurements.

Well Clobber, went to Levers with the wife and guess what she bought me?? Yup its at home now and so when I finally go to sight in my 11.5" AR I will take the 97 out too. When you bought your's did you get a sling? I didn't even get a manual. When they shipped it to me it wasn't even in the proper box it was a Remington box. I will be sending my $100.00 to Can Am this week as I want a non-Restricted as well, I didn't know about the pending import of these more affordable rifles until a couple of days after my purchase but Ive also had more than one AR at a time as well. Your write up was great and the thread really swung me. Thanks. Ireally like the 97 and feel as you do that it is very well made can't wait to fire it. Nothing more to say as it has been said here before.

Nope no sling with mine, it was shipped in a cq311 box. Glad you liked the thread.

Well I took the 97 out for its first outing and I am getting 21/2 -3" groups with it using iron sights at 100m's. The ammo I uses was Fiocchi's 55 gr. FMJ and the second type of ammo was winchesters 55gr. FMJ. The Fiocchi green box actually shot better in this carbine than the Winchester. My next experiment will be with Federal premiums hollow point 55gr.
Defiinitely need a proper sight adjustment tool. The carbine was fed a total of 60 rnds, with a good cleaning in between and I used the two mags it came with as well as 10 rnd pistol mags loaded to 5rnds each. Both mags. fed the carbine with out a hitch. The carbine it self functioned with out any problems what so ever. Interesting trigger. I found it long but when squeezed it was not gritty kind of soft due to the long linkage I think, but here's what I liked.
When releasing the trigger after good trigger control through the recoil I found the re-set was like when shooting my Sig 226, it was nice and the audable click was pronounced as my cheek weld was right above the mechanical inards. I like how it balanced and how it was so easy to tear down, I removed the tower to drift the front sight as I had no tool. I then reinstalled it and for fine adjustments I loosened the little 8mm nut on the front of the towers pedestal to move it left or right for fine tunning. There is an elevation tool in the tool box found in the pistol grip. When adjusting the windage using the front it is the oposite of adjusting windage using a rear sight as we know. All in all I am happy with the performance of this arm as it compares to the standard AR with a regular barrel and 21/2 - 3'' is avarage.
Anyhow these are my impressions and hope they are of help, but let me say this, I have ordered the non restricted 97 as well and am fully happy with my choice for doing so after getting this experience with the restricted. Next I will mount my Chinese scope and wring it out at the range today.
Latter boys and girls.

thanks for your review, I also ordered a non restricted one also, be sure to give us your thoughts on the scope also as I am tempted to get one.:D

Hori here are more thoughts on how the carbine ran today

Hey Hori,
Well the wife and I just got back from another range session with the 97 and we also mounted the scope then zeroed it for the same distance being 100M.
I had no more Fiocchi rnds. and used the Winchester white box FMJ 55 gr. ammo.
At 100 M the reticle was easy to pick up and is very fine, the targets I used were the red diamond centers with a red cross and I was able to keep 16 of 20 rnds in that area some were on the edge but only four were in the white.
It was breezy but not to bad. Firing was done in five round groups with a steady cadence. I loaded only 5 to a mag as I wanted to practice my mag changing when each 5 rnd cycle was done. Not the tightest group Ive ever produced and after 3 boxes I could see that the groups were opening up.
Other better optics will be forth coming for this arm but its not to bad. Haven't tried the Federal premium hollow point ammo or the Winchester hollow points yet but hope that the little carbine likes them better. I was happy to see this little arm chuck the brass into a neat little pile forward of the carbine and at a consistant 2 o'clock cause it made it easier for the little woman to police my brass. As a matter of fact she was getting 3 bulls out of every 5 rnds she sent down range and she says for her small frame the recoil was very manageable. She did not like the spring pressure in the charging handle as she stated it was strong and the handle itself was very close to the front of the carrying handle. The design is neat but all in all the accuracy is not match grade by any means, having said that its functioning was to be admired again not a hic up very reliable with basic assault accuracy. My brass was noted to have a dent about half way down the case and like I said the ejection was very positive. If you are firing at the range and someone were in the next firing point he would not have brass raining down on him like from an AR due to the angle of ejection. Now I need to clean it then the next session will be with much more expensive ammo, and hopefully better tighter groups that we all chase. I am glad I bought the scope by the way. Anyhow hope this too was a help Hori. I don't know how to post pictures but if you want I can email you a picture of the target and the carbine with scope attached.

Jack Brock,
May I suggest you try it with 62 grain ammo, or heavier. Most .223/5.56mm rifles these days have faster twist rates. The faster twist rates greatly prefer the heavier ammo.
My Swiss Arms PE-90 shoots 55 grain ammo but the accuracy is mediocre (embarassing actually considering the known accuracy of these rifles). Put in 62-64 grain ammo and the accuracy becomes fairly impressive. Anyways just something to think about for accuracy testing.

It's always good to see someone put in the time to do a write up after a range session. Thanks.

Epoxy, thanks and yes I will be trying heavier weights of ammo as Clobber mentioned these arms had a 1in7 twist. Next time out I will time my session so that I will be able to use the illuminated reticle to see how that works out.
Anyhow thanks again and now its time for me to get into COD 4 and rid myself of some stress lol!!!

Great review Jack! It's nice to see you are trying different types of ammo. I've tried three or four different brands and some military 5.56 and no problems with mine. I eventually want to put a large magnification scope on it and wring it out for accuracy but haven't had the time. Did you try the hold-over lines on the scope yet? If so do they work ok? The reason I am wondering is if they work for the shorty or if they were made for the longer barrel?

Cheers and welcome to the club!

Type 97

Morning Clobber, no didn't try the stada and hash marks on the reticle as I was at the range where we requalify our officers and it is only 100m max. I will try to make it to Missions range as they are out to 300m. Volks would be nice. Anyhow Mission will have to do as it is handier. When I get the non restrict I will be taking it out with my Lica range finder and can really wring it out, but the wait is killing me lol !!
