Well it was incredibly easy. I guess where I was there is a high number of birds and zero hunting pressure. It was way different then deer hunting. sleep till the crack of 11, eat a leisurely breakfast, stroll out into the field, put out my decoy, give a couple of yelps with the call, and the toms come running. Sitting out in the open not being that quiet, wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt, with a polished blued gun that practically shone in the sunlight, and they still came with in 40 yards and closer. Everything I’ve seen on the hunting shows and have taken for gospel was blown out of the water. I love it, almost like a camping trip with turkeys as a spur of the moment thing.

Here is my turkey, in the background you can see the decoy he was hell bent on opening a can of whoop ass on. We called him from about 75 yards in the bush. We'd call, and he'd call right back. He was pissed and looking for a fight. I shot him at about 20 paces as he came into the clear. I was hiding behind a tree, wearing what I have on in the pic, with those two other yahoo's behind me. I used my Fabarm martial proforces 14", with the extended full choke. The shell was "Winchester supreme" Double X Magnum turkey loads. 3", max dram, 2oz of #4 shot. It knocked me over from my tactical shooting stance of squating behind a tree. We both went down though, one shot one kill.

Behind me you can see kevin's car. That's how far we walked. The hardship.

How kevin was to be found 95% of the time.

The other 5% was spent trying to seduce me.

My partner in crime, the lil lady, who opted to take time off of work and spend her birthday in the sticks. I'm a lucky man.

hahaha nice pics sounds like allot of fun! I have one question for all you turkey hunters why do you use a shotgun? why now a 22 or something along those lines? Is it law that you need to use a shotgun?

id guess that its mainly a safety issue more than anything else. plus you want to hit the bird in the head/neck so you dont waste any meat so a shotgun is ideal because turkeys are quick little buggers. in some states they are allowed to use rifles but as far as i know, its shotguns only in canada. also makes it more sporting and fun because you need to get the bird within 40-50 yards. archery is also a popular way of tagging a bird...

nice pics btw. yes you are a lucky guy to have a chick that would do that for ya. now if my house would magically finish the renovations on its own i could get back in the game and start lookin for a chick

Some days...turkey hunting is like goose hunting. If you're sitting on the 'X', then it doesn't seem that hard.

One friend of mine tried explaining to me how easy turkey hunting was when he went out on opening morning 4 years ago and shot his first bird ever after only hunting for 15 minutes. The bird flew off the roost...ran to his decoy...and boom.

...that was, however, the last bird he has shot thus far, as he was skunked the past three years.

Congrats on your first bird Kev!:)
But after hunting turkeys for over twenty years let me offer this observation on your Turkey Hunt.
You are incredibly lucky.

Exactly. Turkey hunting in Ontario has a 25% succcess rate. So, that's 75% that's not putting a bird in a pan.

Sometimes, it seems like shooting fish in a barrel, other times it seems like there's not a bird in the world.

Try the late season turkey hunt, it's not so easy with leaves on all the trees, blackflies, mosquitos, and very very nervous birds.;)

Congrats on the bird!! Looks like a good time at your camp. That meal is making me real hungry.....buuuuttt.....I am a little concerned about that beer you're drinking.

Tell me it's your GF's pint.:p

I have to post my bird for this year again....I'm just sooo proud...he's my second biggest tom to date at 20lbs and change. Biggest was 22.

It was "textbook" as far as getting this guy, found his roost, setup not too far the next morning and called him in.

I HAVE gotten turkeys traditionally, peek and sneak style...aaannnddd "runnin and gunnin"!!

So, just have to get one in the air and 1 in the tree and that should be the circuit, right? hahaha
Calling them in is definately the most fun way to get a bird!!

I have to watch my girl-ish figure. The lil lady picked the beer. (honest)

Oh, and she's not my g/f... she's my wife! :D

Here's another meal pic.

Deer chops, potatos and corn. (shotgun shells are for seasoning) Good thing we only go hunting for a couple of days at a time... I'd need a wheelbarrel to carry my gut into the field.

I think you answered the question with this line, "high number of birds and zero hunting pressure". I also hunt around birds that don't see other hunters & at times they seem ridiculously easy to call & slaughter. I have also hunted pressured birds, & they are some of the most wary creatures I have ever seen. If your calling & camo are NOT perfect you will NOT even see a bird! Enjoy your easy birds while they last, more hunters are on the way  .

I think it would be very interesting to see yearly statistics on new turkey hunter graduations especially in Ontario where I reside.
