Outside the obvious market of box mag sales vs. fixed mag sales...
It's true. After decades of Marlin 60's outselling ruger 10/22's (tube over box). I haven't actually seen many tube fed semi's over counters recently. Even in Marlin/Remington form. I see many box feds in general. The market may have shifted. I'm not certain that "market" represents "best" just quite yet...
You are seeing more and more detachable magazine models being offered, because that is what people are buying. At one time, many repeating rifles used tubular magazines, but the fact is that their sales dropped off, so many models are no longer being offered. Even bolt action rifles like the Remington 700 and Weatherby Vanguard, that formerly offered only fixed magazines, now offer detachable magazine models. Pretty much all tactical rifles, now feature detachable magazines. Even some lever actions, offer detachable magazines. People buy what they like, and the manufacturers respond by producing rifles with the features that sell the best, and that happens to be detachable magazines.
The "tactical" image has very seriously affected the market. No doubt. The law has too (you can have a fully stuffed mag in your glovebox, not so with a tube). Again, market trends don't necessarily equate to "better" designs...VHS beat BEtAmax in mass usage/market as did PC(x86) vs. APPLE too many examples...it doesn't always mean better. In "this world" the 10/22 is a fine example...it was revolutionary as being 10 rd box mag AND as flush as a tube. In the market you're/we're aware of, who buys a 10/22 for a flush fitting 10rd mag?
I could use larger capacity magazines, but in my semi auto, I do use the ten round factory magazines, because they are flush fitting. With my bolt actions, I could use ten shot magazines, but I prefer to use five shot magazines, because they don't protrude nearly as much.
So for the "record" your motivation behind your 10/22 purchase was it's "flush fit" 10rd box mag?
You are among a minority, for sure.
My rifle is actually a Volquartsen, not a 10/22. As for choosing this rifle, the reasons were very good accuracy, a good trigger, a well made stock, and,the fact that it had a ten round magazine, that doesn't protrude way below the stock.
As I posted, I could use a higher capacity magazine, but I choose not to, because I don't like a magazine protruding way below the stock.
The feed tube is an image of a young kid hunting bull frog at night with a flashlight and 25 short 29 gr in the tube, goods souvenirs and today i bring my youngs grandkids shoot those same rounds (CCI short) behind the cabin after supper on pops cans, the learning start there... great. JP.
