I am in the market for a handgun. I do not like revolvers and i think 1911's are a bit "old and boring"(i know they are great guns but that is my opinion).

My choices have changed slightly in the past month. So in order of choices that i am currently wanting to purchase are.

1. Smith and Wesson M&P9

2. HK VP9

3. Sig P320 9mm

4. Walther PPQ M2 5"

5. Glock 17 gen 4

Weigh in with your opinions. The Smith and Wesson wasn't even on my list until 3 days ago.

5. Glock 17 Gen 4 reliable easy to upgrade tons of available parts.. a great starter to give you confidence in do it your self tons of Youtube vids and is a great base line to teach you how to master your trigger control.. and technique..

If you can shoot a Glock you can shoot anything

Buy a used Glock 17 and CZ 75B(D) or SP-01, if you can afford it. Sell the one you don't like. You'll use little money. I'm currently doing the same thing. Thought I'd love the Glock. The SP-01 is starting to take hold…
So. Smooth. To. Shoot.

PPQ M2 didn't like the European mag release. Just feels better in my hand than the Glock. Target aquistion seems faster with the slide being tapered at the top.

I had a S&W M&P9 at one point. It's great if you like a heavy, gritty trigger and factory mags that can't handle a 10th round without modification or lots of break-in time. Still, it taught me that I prefer steel framed guns so it was good for something.

If I were to buy another polymer gun it would probably be the Sig P320. Though I do keep reconsidering a Glock 17 just because it is so incredibly reliable.

They supposedly upgraded the trigger on them in the last year or 2. I have never heard about the magazine issue you are talking about in any reviews.

If they actually upgraded the trigger then that would be an improvement. Here's a few threads about the mag issue:

S&W M&P 9mm mags are A pain to load full without a Maglula. If you were reading US reviews, they don't have a 10 rd mag issue.
As MasterG said, there is no bad gun on your list. Whichever fits your hands and your wallet should be the one you get.
The HK and the Q have the nicest triggers of your list.

Glock is perfection so the advertisements say. I don't like the idea you can't shoot lead projectiles in them but that is just me. I don't like the kick I get because the Glock is so light. I shoot a .40 S&W 1911 and then the Glock and the difference is remarkable. I keep the Glock I have so I can say things like this with some credibility. The Glock I have is a G22 and I have Lone Wolf conversion bbls. so I can shoot 9mm and lead .40S&W. This wasn't cheap. The 9mm brass hit me on the head. I mainly use the gun to take out for new shooters to try and compare it to a Ruger P series, the 1911, a revolver say S&W 610 etc. I let them decide how perfect the Glock is. And I have flameproof underwear so flame away I don't care.

I love my PPQ M1. It supplanted my Gen 2 Glock 17 as my go to. I've also shot my brother's M&P a bit. I have no experience on the H&K or Sig. For Tupperware, I also have a Steyr M40A1.

I'd suggest the PPQ as the trigger is lovely. The Glock is great as they are ubiquitous, and parts and accessories are super easy to find. The newer M&Ps are much better than older, and the range kits are a good value. Clear as mud!?

You say no revolvers or 1911's but why are you just looking at polymer guns? What about CZ, Beretta, Sig etc? I can understand the weight advantage of plastic if you are carrying it all day but for our purposes of paper punching....?

Glock 17 is sort of old and boring as well eh...... :)
PPQ and the VP9 would be at the top of my list from the ones you've listed. The mags are pricey and hard to find though if you want more then the 2 they come with.

I think your best value for dollar would be the M&P with a trigger job, which is super easy to do yourself and there's a pile of good youtube vids that will walk you thru it. Plus when you decide that striker fired guns are great for duty guns but not so great as range guns, you won't loose much when you resell. I've never had mag problems with them but some don't like mag loaders.

The G 17 is right in there as well, but generally a bit more, and you don't get the range kit (holster pouches and extra mag.

The PPQ is a sweet pistol and one striker fired gun i would add to the collection (to sit beside the xd glock and M&P). They feel good point well and have a very good trigger for a striker gun. You pay more, holsters are harder to find and mags are pricey

I can't comment on the HK, but i suspect it's as good or better. but you generally pay for those two letters. I don't know what they sell for in canada, but i doubt you'd be dissappointed. Again holsters and mags are going to be a bit more work to find, and mags will not be cheap

I've shot the FN and really liked it, as for a very good price as well. Trigger not quite as nice, but then it's a good bit cheaper.\

Don't overlook either the original XD or the XDM series, I've had stirling service from them in terms of accuracy and reliability.

There really aren't any dogs in the race if you stick to the name brand players. The oddballs like the FMK can be nice, but i've personally seen reliability issues and it's hard to find parts / support.

Finally, for a first handgun, it's really worth checking out used. You will save a good bit, and at this point you really don't know what you like yet, just what you think you like, The more you shoot, the more your opinion may change (or not, but most do) So don't sink a giant wad until you've got more experience.

Cheers and have fun!
