A few years ago I ran across "Long Range Pursuit" and thought those rifles look nice. Later I found myself in Grouse River and seen the sticker on one and thought WTF? How does that gun add up to $10g +. So I started searching the EE for my next project.

I came across a Tikka M65 in 7mm rem mag with a broken stock. A little internet research and I learned that the M65's were very well built actions. The triggers were supposedly great, came with a detachable mag and they shot pretty well too. I snatched it up and placed an order for a McMillan stock. 10 months later a McMillan game scout showed up. I ordered the stock with pillars installed, 3'' seekins rail up front, 2 flush cups on the left side and a 1" limbsaver. Colours are olive drab, black and woodland beige. I found a fluted broughton #4 contour, 1-9 twist barrel on the EE so I grabbed that too. The parts were sent to Terry at Black Art Rifle Company. The gun was bedded, barrel fitted and chambered in 7mm rem mag. The metal was coated with matte black cerakote.

For glass I decided to take a leap of faith and ordered a Bushnell LRHS 4.5-18x44. Omer from Plain Sight Solutions helped me out with the purchase. I've had bad luck with bushy's in the past but I've never owned a high end one. Omer assured me the quality of these scopes is excellent and at first glance I have to agree. My only experience with higher end glass is with Nightforce and all I can say at this point is the glass is very similar to my eye. The scope allowed me to have a zero stop, smaller objective, less weight and a save a fair chunk of change over a comparable Nightforce.

Started barrel break in today but the range got busy and I left before I could accomplish much. This will be rifle #3 from Terry and if his past work is any indication I'm sure I'll have a rifle that will give any LR1000 a run for less than half the price. Thanks again to Terry and Omer for helping me get this thing together. I'll update the thread once I get her up and running. (If anybody knows where there is a supply of 168gr LRAB's I'd love to hear about it)

I look forward to shooting some. I had planned on the LRAB but they seem to be pretty hard to come by right now. Thats what I had shot in the gun while I was waiting for my chance to get it to Terry. I think plan B will be the 168gr classic hunter from berger. BC is still decent and they seem a little easier to come by. One downfall to the M65 action is I'm limited to 3.4" COAL. I'd like to run a heavier bullet but if it can't mag feed it defeats the purpose. Ideally I want to nail down 1 load and use it for long range steel and hunting. If anybody has another bullet suggestion I'm all ears.

Not yet. I've only got a dozen bullets left from the last barrel. I doubt I'll try until I source a decent amount of bullets to work up a load with. I didn't have much trouble touching 800 with the factory barrel and a 2.5-10 scope so I hope the new setup does a little better.

I have the 3-12 version of your scope and I'm really happy with it. Really good value in my opinion and tracks great.

Why not try 180 bergers? I haven't shot the lrab's but I'd be suprised if they were more consistent than bergers in weight and bearing surface.

Lr1000 = Custom gunwexrks action. match barrel, hand laid stock, bedded, jewel trigger, night force scope, custom muzzle break (seamless I might add), 1000 yard half moa out of the box. Load data provided. They test every rifle out to 1000 before boxing it up. Comes with a pelican case. One man puts every rifle together.

My only fear with them is having to stuff the bullet deep into the case to make mag feed. With the mag limiting me to 3.4'' I don't think I'll be able to get the VLD bullet close to the rifling and mag feed the gun. I've never shot a VLD that didn't want to be jammed onto the lands or seated right next to them. The LRAB quite were jump tolerant in the last barrel.

I must admit that I have to shake my head when I imagine someone paying full price for the rifles advertised on LRP or BOTW. But if you market correctly, there are people out there that just don't know any better.

I'm not claiming the gunwerks isn't a nice, well made rifle. When you add up the sum of the parts it seems to me that a guy is paying an extravagant amount for a 1/2 moa guarantee, test firing and a pelican case. As far as load data I'd suspect it all works out with their custom ammo that retails for $150 per box. I doubt they take time to custom tailor a load to each rifle. My idea here was to have something assembled that could do everything the LR1000 does without the price tag. I just looked and the comparable LR1000 will run $12,500 ( stainless fluted barrel, steel action, detachable mag, 7mm rem mag)

The M65 action while not custom, is smooth as butter, rock solid, has a side bolt release and an integral recoil lug. It also comes with a detachable mag that can be easily top loaded. When I asked Terry what work the action needed he said "those old Tikka's are pretty well made. I didn't have to true it to make it straight. " Sounds like custom action features and quality for a few hundred bucks. Broughton makes match grade barrels and I suspect this will run with the Kreigers and Shilen's I've shot in the past. McMillan stocks are hand laid and this one is pillar and devcon bedded. Trigger is superb and adjustable. I've owned a Jewel in the past and this trigger doesn't leave me wanting. I was going to run a brake but I purchased one a little too large for the barrel contour. The gun was a pussycat to shoot with the few rounds I did send down range so I doubt I'll be adding one. If I don't get 1/2 MOA out of this rifle it's my fault, not the rifle.

They do one hell of a job marketing, that is for sure. I have no doubt they are fantastic rifles but I think a person can have a 1000 yard capable hunting / steel shooting rifle that doesn't require a mortgage. Time will tell if I got this right or am left eating crow but right now I'm very happy.

I have some 168gr ABLR, lots of Classic Hunter 168's too. PM if interested.

nice rifle! I like it

Thanks! I seen your add for the classic hunters in the EE. I'm going to do a little more digging today before I decide which bullet I'd like to run. I appreciate the offer!

I wouldn't call it a "poor man's LR1000". I'd call it an "educated and motivated man's LR1000". Gunwerks produces awesome rifles. There is no doubt about that. But if you are willing to do some homework (and legwork) you can produce an equally effective weapon and keep several grand in your pocket. But then again, someone has to pay for those guys to go to Africa every year.

I like the way you put that. The route I took was not easy or quick but I feel it will get me where I want to be at a significant price reduction from the alternative. Again I won't know until I actually start building a load but I'm sure I won't be disappointed. And I enjoy those watching those Africa hunts so I hope people who don't want the legwork keep buying. Myself, I will build a load, verify drops, hand load my ammo and transport in a soft rifle case to save nearly $7000. The pelican case is a real ##### to get your rifle out of on short notice anyway lol!

$7000.00 savings will buy a lot of firearms components ...not to mention put lots of food on the table for the budget minded folks out there too.
If it works for you, then run what ya brung and ring that gong !
