X2 on that one fer sure.;
Me last Savage was a model 11 in .223 with an 18" heavy barrel, threaded fer suppressors & had the big bolt knob and digital camo synthetic stock. The bugger shot
well but the rifle was a tad too porky for workin' the bush. That big-ass bolt knob also helped to cause bolt rattle whilst walking. The ugly muzzle nut didn't help much in the looks & the exterior metal finish was not near as good as the latest 783's.
Like a dis one. Ya, these may look a bit like something George Jetson would use, but I really like the way they shoot, feel and handle. "Day be de cat's ass mon."

Did they change the 116 recently to the ####ty mag design? Friend of mine bought the Laminate Stainless 116 Bushnell Elite 4500 package recently and its a nice gun with metal mag with metal release that's part of the gun. Those plastic ones from the 111 and Axis are famous for popping out under recoil.

No, I don’t think he is.
My first rifle my father bought for me was a Savage 111 FCXP3, the entry level cheap rifle with a low quality scope on it. It is a fantastic rifle! Metal mags, bottom metal, trigger guard, doesn't have the accutrigger, but the stock one breaks clean with non-existent creep and very accurate. Pretty good value for a $430 rifle if you ask me!
A buddy let me look over his Axis, I decided then and there I was done with Savage. If they are producing rifles of that horrible of quality for the same price as what used to be the bottom of the barrel, they aren't worth my money.

You are better off buying an older Remington 700, Winchester M70, or a Ruger 77 used off the EE or where ever. Buy once cry once.

I found a Schultz&Larsen M65 DL chambered in 308 norma mag by simply walking into a local sports shop for $700, mind you this was about 23 years ago. I also found a Sako AV 25-06 for $750. Get out and look, go to gun shows, do what ever it takes, its fun looking. Rebel against buying junk!

The remington 700 started it. A simple tube and ease of manufacture, without the custom fit of the pre 64 model 70. Winchester responded by "axis...ing" their product line in 1964.
Its been all down hill since then. Periodically a new manufacturer introduces a nicer product at a slightly higher price point. Inevitably those also diminish in quality. For example, the Browning A bolt.
Better hang on to it, looks like the new American classics have matte blued barrels. Doesn't sound like a classic to me. I have 2 model 11's, a 204 and a 270wsm. Both with wood stocks, polished blued barrels(hate matte barrels BTW), metal trigger guards and magazines and accutrigger. Don't think they make a rifle with a polished blued barrel anymore. They have way too many models to keep a track of but looks like they are all trending towards the axis'. Not that metal magazines are a must for me. I have x-bolts with polymer mags that fit better and load easier than the savage metal ones do.
