My refinished SVT40

Bought it from a fellow member about a month ago, the finish was decent but with lots of signs of wear. I decided to sand it down completely and give it a new coat of stain and varnish. I started with 40, 80, 100, 220 and then 400grit for sanding between coats. I went with minwax polyshades bombay mahogany for the stain, put on 8 coats. I also used a flat black on the heat shield, bolt carrier cover, butt plate and the trigger assembly. Here are the final results, I think it came out pretty decent.






















 
Nice Avt stock. Wood looks like it was in very good condition, no repairs, good tight fit. Seeing as its refinished, might as well go all the way and strip that awful purple off the bolt. ;)
 
Almost too pretty to shoot!!

Now strip that plum color off the bolt (and carrier - just strip both down and place in vinegar - it's in the stickie) and it'll look as if it came out of the factory in '43!
 
...Except that since the end of 1941 they were coming out of factories with plum bolt carriers. Not like "correctness" does matter at all for a rifle with customized stock finish.
 
I read the write up on getting the finish off the bolt. The vinegar seems like the easy part, but the polishing afterwards seems like a royal pain!!! Well, I have a day off work tomorrow, I guess it'll give me something to do LOL. As for the correctness, its not a concern for me. This rifles more of a workhorse anyway, not the prettiest one in the collection by any means. That being said, making cosmetic alterations is fine for me.
 
remember to oil it some after you take it out of vinegar. mine developed rust in spots all over it after just a few min drying .. its highly nickle but their is definitely some iron spots in there so if you remove the plumb you need to then oil it at the very least.

I rubbed some lube/protectant spray onto all the parts and it stopped any further issue.

I'll keep that in mind. Were you able to polish yours up at all?
