My Romanian AK-47 **video added**

There are things I like about the AK, and things I like about the VZ-58. I see a few VZ-58's here in Kabul and of couse almost everyone and his goat has an AK-47. Back home I prefer my VZ, but over here in Kabul I prefer the AK... almost an unlimited source of parts and ammo.

Its funny that some people dont realize that AK will hold open on an empty mag, one of my team mates got upset that all of our do... kept grumbling that he never saw that in 8 years in Iraq as a PSD, so I guess it depends on make, mags, and a little dirt maybe.

Can you make the bolt stay open without a mag in the rifle like on the CZ? Is there a bolt release?

I am pretty sure that it is the magazines for those AK's that have the bolt hold open, not the actual rifle itself. If you look at the magazine follower, it probably has a steel "round" welded to the follower that pops up when the mag is empty holding the bolt open.

like this:

Either way, that is a sick collection of AK's you have there, I am pretty jealous.

Yes, with the bolt held back, turn the AK over and look in the magwell, there is a curved flat bar, pull tension on it at the outside radius of the curve, you will hear a click. Release bolt, bolt stays back. After a few tries, you can do it blind, similiar to using a finger to trip the magazine disconnector to drop the hammer in the Browning Hi Power.

I will take some photos of it and post.

Interesting! I have not seen this type before.

Thanks for the info.

Any pics of the ak's in action ?

there is nothing like a avtomat kalashnikova model of 1947 you dont have to worry about jams like one person said its a ak nothing will make it stop running

on thing i dont like about the CZ 58 or 858 is the mag release you cant really do the whole quick mag change grab a new mag use it to hit the release and pop the mag out then it a quick stick in the new mag reach your hand under the gun(this is where some go wrong) and rack the bolt. other then that(well maybe the stock) i do like the 858 but its still not a ak

i have a older deact ak(bolt moves but is not removable) and it has a removable mag its fun to play around with after a bit it gets a little too quick with the mag change

super true. most of the 5.54 makes have the nice mags. Although those mags are like gold.

Have you seen many ak74s? that would be a ###y item to have.

So that's where you ended up to Pops. Looks like it agrees with you. Keep your head down and your powder dry! :)

Hey X-man, how the heck are you doing? Yes, I ended here one day after my retirement from the military last year. I am keeping busy, almost got taken out by a 12.7mm and RPG but they missed. All is good, I have a great team and even learning to speak Dari. I give all my weapons drill in Dari now.

Powder is dry.

Nice pics! Technically, the M70's an AKM variant, but it's a very nice rifle. Make sure you clean and oil it well after shooting surplus. The barrel isn't chrome-lined. My dad had a gunnut buddy (abroad) who was well connected with the local police so they didn't bother him when he went out to the pit to play with his toys.. Had a couple of M70's from Bosnia, some actual AK-47's, even an M16 (most likely sources due to the time of acquisition would have been Iraq 1.0 or some corrupt South American cop/soldier). Since the country's policing got brought up to our standards, I'm assuming the coolest toys have been packed in cosmoline and buried in the corn field, in case the Turks/Austro-Hungarians/Bulgarians/Germans/Yanks/Zombies invade :D Now he's limited to the standard Canadian fare - a few handguns, hunting rifles and a couple of semi-autos.
