My Ruger 10/22 takedown project

Just wanted to share what I learned from using some of the aftermarket parts for standard 10/22 on the takedown model.

Stock is from ATI, I had to chop the front end and left the original fore grip. I could have done a better job and made the gap smaller, but hey it s my first gun and mod. The rail is an Aim Sports Ruger 10/22 Tactical Quad Rail; which I also had to split at the takedown joint and remove some of the side rail (optional but more cutting required).

I also installed the quick bolt release, it s identical to std 10/22. Except for the takedown screw and lever, the barrel and receiver seem to be compatible with the original 10/22 dimensions. Internals/trigger looks all the same, extended mag release is standard.

Everything fits in the carry bag but I have to remove the scope, had to do it anyway with the original stock. Hope that helps.

I was thinking about this same project. Any special tool/s required for the job? What about the part of the stock where the ring tightens the barrel is located? Did you make some adjustments like grinding or milling? I believe there is an undercut with the original stock, to which I am not sure with the ATI version.

No special tools required, only a metal saw and a file.

I kept the original takedown stock in the front, the AIM rail fitted perfectly. You are right, keeping the ATI fore stock would had required a lot of milling by trial to accommodate the takedown lever. Also I prefer a metal rail, so the ATI original wasn't that interesting, I really just wanted it for the adjustable length of pull and folding.

One has to note that since the AIM rail was cut, it is no longer supported on the receiver, only at the front, the rail is very securely attached to the barrel and fore grip by 4 screws, in sandwich, about 2 to 2.5 inches of support. AIM also provides a metal spacer that hugs the barrel against the top portion of the rail. If really concerned, one could further secure the rail with additional screws and spacers directly on the fore grip back-end, close to the takedown point, by screwing in the plastic.

Great minds think alike... I was actually planning to do something similar (same thing, different stock). Glad to see it done.
