Hey guys, check this out.

Last summer I commented that I was going to undertake a project. I wanted a sturdy scout rifle - but without the magazine. I had bubba'd the Weatherby stock, but was not really satisfied until I had found a pistol grip. Folks wanted to see pics of it when I finished it.

Here it is:

Weatherby Carbine - 308, with Williams sights as backup
MacMillian BAF (folding) Stock
Magpul buttstock, buffer tube and cheek riser.
Scope to suit. I may get a Burris Red Dot, who knows.

I'm a Happy Camper. Will test at the range shortly and let you know the results. :D

I like it and interested in doing something similar to a Savage rifle. I prefer a more squared up stance when shooting and prefer a shorter LOP. Do you have pictures of the process and how you reinforced the rear of the stock for the buffer tube and pistol grip to be attached?

The stock came complete with the folding mechanism and receiver for the tube. If you go to the MacMillian website, look for the BAF stocks. You have to choose style (Picantinny for add-ons, or plain - like mine) colour and the action it will be fitted for.

The hardest part was the length of time for delivery. A 5 month wait.

Gotcha. I misunderstood and thought you had modded the stock yourself.

Well I'll be damned. There has been some darn good thinking done on that project. A lot of pikers have claimed to have improved on the Colonel's scout rifle but I have never seen anyone actually do it!

A range report would be most interesting...

Where are you going with that thing..................Afghanistan?

To the range, man, after that - my Jeep and where ever it happens to point. It started out as an idea to improve the little carbine - just did not quite know how. I had shot a buddy's AR and really liked the feel of the pistol grip but also liked the feel of that Weatherby bolt action, but not the stock. Along came McMillan and that pistol grip. The rest sorta fell into place after that. Will post a range report this weekend.

I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm fine with that. Just thought some folks, based on previous posts, would see there are alternative options out there too.

Gut reaction: that rifle is hideous.

Maybe I got the firearm equivalent of beer goggles by the last photo, but I have to say I see the appeal regardless. Any bolt gun with iron sights makes me excited! Out of curiosity, why did you want to skip the magazine?

It's just a stock.....easy to change. It should be comfortable to shoot off a rest and easy to adjust to fit the shooter.
