:D Picked up a neat little LEE .490'' single cavity mold at the NANAIMO F&G gun show last week. dug out an old 7/16'' thick aluminum saucepan about 2 liter capacity,picked up a big (silver) spoon and an old ladel at the thrift store for 60 cents. cut a few pieces of wax off an emergency candle and found about 30 pounds of pure lead i had stashed away(THANKS TO H.M.C.S.OREILLE). set up my workins in the back yard and had at er!!!!! to my surprise, i was able to cast exactly 200 shiny new lead balls.(STILL HAVE LOTS OF LEAD).:D :D :D made my day. HEY, its the little things in life ,like little shiny balls that can put a smile on an old farts face. CHEERS POPS:evil:
 
Here is a trick to get consistantly poured balls.
Run the temperature of your lead as hot as possible...the casting process will be a bit slower. The ball will come out of the mold and turn a shade of blue/silver. This indicates a very consistant and stable projectile, with no hidden voids.
Plus the benefit of bragging right that you have shiny blue balls!!!

TKS ALONZO, WILL TRY HEATING IT UP,. RED DEVILS? HUNTER, WEIGHT of ball that was in mold when i got it was 173.3 gr. a friend at work took it home and weighed it . POPS:runaway:

Glad to hear you got it on the cheap side...200 round balls must be a year supply! at least...?
Casting...No Sweat...specially in the molten lead!

:shotgun: HELLO JACQUES, 200 rounds,about 5 pounds of lead. good POUR LA FIN DE LASEMAINE and mabe not that long.( i am orignally from ILE PERROT QUEBEC.)had hunted alot around GRAND REMOUS., my cousin was the head game warden in La VERANDRIES park back in the early 70's.lots of moose and grouse back then. miss your area in the fall when the leaves start to change color. the lead is pure virgin lead, can't do no better. So what do you shoot with? and shoot at? you must have worked out the dream combination of components...personally I do not go to the range often enough to reach cruising speed...everytime I feel I and working out a new combination...you must be retired!?

:D i only have a 10 minute drive to be in a shooting area. i am shooting a .50 cal. kentucky flintlock. did a little work on the touch hole (THANKS TO NESSY .357). and am using a natural flint. tried agate and T/C black manmade flints, but they preformed poorly. 60 grains of FFFg with .490 or .495 pure lead balls and all works well. i tried 70 grains, but, got a big boom and lost accurcy. i spend as much time as i can in the mountains. lots of beautiful places within 40-50 miles. i fish ,camp,and do a little prospecting too. cheers GLENN aka POPS
 
HUNTSMAN, correction on my.490dia. pure lead balls. picked up a quality powder scale at a local gon show this week. the balls now weigh 177.00 grains. i weighed some speer 150grainers for my ,06 and they came spot on at 150. tried some 215(KNOWN WEIGHT)grainers for a .303, and they came in at 215.2 and 215.1. so i believe the scale and now have 177grainers and not 173 as i reported.
