My SKS

Hey guys, I got my first sks a few months ago. I like tinkering and screwing around with stuff, I also wanted a cheap, reliable semi-auto that I could plink around with and also take up north with me for my first deer camp this November. The sks seemed to fit all of those categories. Anyways I made this stock, just for something to do. It's rougly finished (quickly oiled and painted, needs to be actually done), so it's not too perty, just a little project.

**Before somebody rambles on with face palms and such, this was a stock I bought from a fellow member, that was already painted, I basically just paid for shipping. No rifles were hurt in the making of this little arts and crafts project. No permanent modifications were made to any of the original numbers matching rifle.**

May not be the prettiest thing, but it kind of resembles the whole "red rifle" look, I built it for very cheap, and it actually shoulders very nice, feels solid, but is a little hefty. It can also still be field stripped with no tools.

lol franken-simonov. its a russian stock, cut down to fit a VZ folder and a Romanian ak pistol grip.

Just got to try out the trs25 last week with surplus. I was mostly just screwing around at 100 yards, but most of the grouping was around 3 inches or less (I shot around 30 rounds of 80's surplus at a target, 19 of those landed in a 3x3" square, many of them within two inches, very tight, and several double taps, the rest were just outside of the 3inch square, with the exception of a few flyers). Do you guys think that's pretty good? I'm a pretty new shooter, and I think if I do my part, I could shrink that quite a bit, especially with better rounds. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow and I will try some MFS non-corrosive, as that seemed to shrink the groups a bit with irons. I also have some S&B and PRVI soft point that I will try out.

At 50 yards, I did a couple 3 shot groups that were pretty tight.

I have to say, I enjoy shooting the gun alot more with the trs25 over the irons. Much easier to aquire a sight picture, and I'm way more consistent with it. Will make a great brush gun as far as I'm concerned.

I think that is awesome shooting for an sks... I think you are luck to have an accurate one, but you are also doing youre part to get so accurate.

Thanks 7mmlefty I'm quite happy with my sks, I'd like to smooth out the trigger a bit, but she seems to be doing great. I guess I secretly knew what I was doing when the guy showed me a dozen sks's and said pick one lol.

I got a little discouraged about using it for deer after reading all these stories about terrible accuracy, but after my last range trip I feel very confident.

How did you know which one to pick?... I recently bought a russian from a member here on cgn that was also hand picked, rifle shoots better than expected...

I covered my eyes with one hand, rotated my other hand with my index finger pointed out in a circle and said "eeny, meeny, miny, moe" lol. I had no clue what I was doing. I had come up with a list of things in my head to look for, but when I started looking that all went out of the window because I was just excited. I really did just luck out.

My SKS trigger was a little crunchy too. Polished the sear up with some blocks and 800 and 1000 grit wet dry sand paper and it really made a difference in the feel. Check this site

I didn't do any revamp of the angles on the sear like he described because I didn't really want to screw with the trigger group that much but it will show you how to get the trigger group apart and tell you what to polish.

Nice job on the stock mod by the way, pretty stylish.

trebor, it's a Bushnell TRS-25 mounted on a BCTactical scout mount.

thought I would post a few groupings I did on Monday. To be honest most of my groupings were decent, with the exception of a few flyers. I have a sinus infection and I didn't realize how much it was going to bother me shooting until I started and it felt like my teeth were falling out (especially with a guy shooting a Garand beside me too lol). Like I said, I'm a pretty new shooter, and I'm still learning lots, but I think these groups are pretty good:

these were two seperate 3 shot groups I did early (the trs-25 needed a bit of tweaking)

this one wasn't too bad

this one was my favourite, for obvious reasons lol

Sorry for the fuzzy pics, but I'm sure you get the idea. I was shooting MFS steel cased fmj.

Huh. May be time to think about the BCtac mount and a TRS-25 project. These are 50 yard groups? Nice work.
