Latest update:

The .260 barrel is screwed on and test fired. Life is great. While I was assembling the bolt, I sent (who has never done this...) the ejector and spring across the shop floor. Found the spring and then I could not locate the ejector. :(

So I emailed the Surgeon Rifles people in Prague, OK and they sent me replacement bolt innards at NO CHARGE! Even if it was my fault. I was happy to pay for the spare: ejector, ejector spring, ejector retaining pin, firing pin retaining pin. What great service.

Brass mic'ed out to 2 and 3 thou over the 1.630" SAAMI GO gauge. Remember that the .260 Rem is derived from the .308 parent cartridge so the gauges are all the same. I love the .260 because I am all tooled up for the .308 which is the 260's parent. Identical headspace dimensions. The reading/measurement/mic'ing tool I use is the RCBS Precision Mic. It set me back $ 70ish from Wholesale Spurtz, but that was when they had a super inventory several years ago. I age myself. :D

This week my HS Precision stock is being mailed to Casey at www.tacord.com (a board sponsor) so that he can mill out/inlet the PTG Bottom metal that I bought for $200ish from Sean or juanvaldez at North Shore Barrels in Sudbury, ON.

Will post pics soon...

Cheers,
Barney

Here she is... all ready for the season....

The barrel is a .260 Rem take-off from a VLS 700 that I bought here on the EE Forum. I took the barrel off and sold the action/stock/receiver. Yup, I wanted only the .260 barrel in Varmint Rem M700 profile because I do have to hunt with the rifle, unlike those ultra cool, accurate, attractive, and also expensive F-Class rigs that give me a hernia just looking at them. :D

The barrel work was done by your moderator here on CGNutz, tiriaq... a great guy. Very meticulous and knows more about 'smithing' the M14 that I will ever know. :)

As I mentioned on the previous post, the brass mic's out at 2 to 3 thou above the 1.630" .308 GO Gauge and I'm super pleased.

More pics... The scope is a Mark 4 M1 Turret LR 6.5 x 20 x 50mm TMR reticle. I wish it was a FFP but my first son is in 2nd year Chiropractic School and tuition is $22K per year. FFP ain't gonna be happening for a long while. Gotta work some overtime shifts to get one of those fancy optics... :D

Of course, some of you will be asking what about that 20 MOA rail? Well, that's all part of the action. The attraction to the the Surgeon 591 is that the scope mount is machined into the receiver as part of it and acts as a super stiffener 'bridge'. So minimum flex in the action is key.

I'm running a pair of TPS rings from Brownells. Low height, 30mm and steel construction. All my rifles (not that many) run TPS rings, parts commonality. I like a company that sells spare parts for their rings.

Bolt knob is a Badger Ordnance which is shorter than the ones shown in first post, first page; that was the factory bolt knob from Surgeon.

Bottom metal inletting done by Casey at Tacord.com (board sponsor)

We are blessed and super lucky to have talented 'smiths around our CGNutz community like Casey (Arwenace is his CGNutz handle). He spent a couple of hours milling out the trigger guard area so that the PTG bottom metal will fit perfectly. Casey ensured that he measured the pillars included with the PTG kit, and that they matched the inletting inside the HS Precision stock. Now the magazine feeds perfectly. Yup, I was in the basement workshop feeding brass cases from the AICS magazine. Life is great.

AICS magazines, both .308 and .223 versions because I got another build on the horizon....

I will be building a .223 SPS Tac with a take-off 9" twist 20" factory barrel and then feeding that rifle with the AICS Polymer black magazines that you see in the picture. These magazines work with all the AICS bottom metal kits being sold all over the Innernet and on the CGNutz community sponsors.

So yes, you CAN use your bottom metal and short action stock between .223 and .308 (.22-250, .243, .7mm-08, .260) receivers. And that's the appeal of this project.

So this is the rifle being used in my Precision Rifle / Sniper clinics out in Calgary (soon to be filmed by Funker Tactical) and in Petawawa this fall. Many of you will get to shoot a Surgeon 591 rifle. We are gonna have fun! And that's what it's all about.

Thanks for reading this and sharing in the addiction!

Hey Barn looks good, what finish is on your gun? and did you do it yourself?

Have a look at my first post regarding the NEW finish (in the white) from the factory. Then you will see the "after" parkerizing tank shots. So it's parkerized now. I will shoot it this way. :D

And since many of you out there know that I have "gun" ADD (attn deficit disorder), when I sell this unit (likely some time before my kids put me in a crack-house nursing home) it will still be parkerized and ready for your Duracoat or Arma-coat treatment. That's the plan anyways , while I'm still alive and kicking. Life is short.

Cheers,
Barney

PS: bring on the rifle addiction!

Great looking build Hungry!

Makes me think I should sell a couple of little used guns and tacticool gear and start thinking about a bolt action rig. Hmmmm

Don't think I will start this far up the ladder though!

Great rifle!

Where did you get the bottom metal and Mags ? and will it fit in a cut out for standard rem700 drop floor plate ? I wouldn't mind that for my custom 7 mag

The PT&G bottom metal is designed for shorter cartridges, and uses Accuracy International type magazines. It most definitely does not fit the original Remington inletting.
I do not know of there is a long cartridge version. Check the PT&G website, or contact Northshore Barrels.
HS Precision units fit factory inletting.

I have a 30 cal tube.
I have a 700 action.
I have a Timney trigger.
I also have a HS stock.....

I was almost ready to drop the 'box o parts' at the smiths and eagerly await a new toy......

But dang that is a nice looking piece of kit!

I may have to rethink my project.....

What profile of barrel did you use? Also have you developed any loads for it yet?

My barrel profile? It's a factory barrel from a Rem M700 VLS that started out at 26" and then tiriaq cut and crowned that baby. He did the install or re-install, I should say.

This rifle shoots so predictably well, especially after today's practice match at Amiens Range, Base Borden with the ORA. :D

For shooting my sniper matches inside 500m/yds, I like the 108 gr Lapua Scenar booolit. I'm loading 41.0 gr WC735 (a surplus ball powder from Higginson Powders, outside Ottawa). They are coming out around 3051 fps.

For distances 500m and beyond, I'm happy with my 139 gr Lapua Scenars. They are followed by a 37.0 gr load of WC735 and exiting around 2725 fps. It's a warm load. YMMV.

Got some pics to be posted soon....

Cheers,
Barney
