Here she is... all ready for the season....
The barrel is a .260 Rem take-off from a VLS 700 that I bought here on the EE Forum. I took the barrel off and sold the action/stock/receiver. Yup, I wanted only the .260 barrel in Varmint Rem M700 profile because I do have to hunt with the rifle, unlike those ultra cool, accurate, attractive, and also expensive F-Class rigs that give me a hernia just looking at them.
The barrel work was done by your moderator here on CGNutz, tiriaq... a great guy. Very meticulous and knows more about 'smithing' the M14 that I will ever know.
As I mentioned on the previous post, the brass mic's out at 2 to 3 thou above the 1.630" .308 GO Gauge and I'm super pleased.
More pics... The scope is a Mark 4 M1 Turret LR 6.5 x 20 x 50mm TMR reticle. I wish it was a FFP but my first son is in 2nd year Chiropractic School and tuition is $22K per year. FFP ain't gonna be happening for a long while. Gotta work some overtime shifts to get one of those fancy optics...
Of course, some of you will be asking what about that 20 MOA rail? Well, that's all part of the action. The attraction to the the Surgeon 591 is that the scope mount is machined into the receiver as part of it and acts as a super stiffener 'bridge'. So minimum flex in the action is key.
I'm running a pair of TPS rings from Brownells. Low height, 30mm and steel construction. All my rifles (not that many) run TPS rings, parts commonality. I like a company that sells spare parts for their rings.
Bolt knob is a Badger Ordnance which is shorter than the ones shown in first post, first page; that was the factory bolt knob from Surgeon.
Bottom metal inletting done by Casey at Tacord.com (board sponsor)
We are blessed and super lucky to have talented 'smiths around our CGNutz community like Casey (Arwenace is his CGNutz handle). He spent a couple of hours milling out the trigger guard area so that the PTG bottom metal will fit perfectly. Casey ensured that he measured the pillars included with the PTG kit, and that they matched the inletting inside the HS Precision stock. Now the magazine feeds perfectly. Yup, I was in the basement workshop feeding brass cases from the AICS magazine. Life is great.
AICS magazines, both .308 and .223 versions because I got another build on the horizon....
I will be building a .223 SPS Tac with a take-off 9" twist 20" factory barrel and then feeding that rifle with the AICS Polymer black magazines that you see in the picture. These magazines work with all the AICS bottom metal kits being sold all over the Innernet and on the CGNutz community sponsors.
So yes, you CAN use your bottom metal and short action stock between .223 and .308 (.22-250, .243, .7mm-08, .260) receivers. And that's the appeal of this project.
So this is the rifle being used in my Precision Rifle / Sniper clinics out in Calgary (soon to be filmed by Funker Tactical) and in Petawawa this fall. Many of you will get to shoot a Surgeon 591 rifle. We are gonna have fun! And that's what it's all about.
Thanks for reading this and sharing in the addiction!
