From what I've read, this 1941 Tula rifle started as an SVT 38 and was rebuilt to SVT 40 specs (from the square stamp on the receiver). Then it was refurbed with a 1943 Tula AVT 40 stock. Lots of WW2 history here.

Square supposedly indicates rebuilt SVT 38:

Bore looks perfect, can't wait to go to the range!

Good to know. I'm familiar with SKS refurb marks. A couple of sites said the square indicated a rebuilt SVT 38. There are no grooves in the reciver for optic mounts either.

Its just a refurb mark, I believe that svt-38 have rectangular receiver top verses the square top of the SVT-40. Also your rifle has the late war muzzle brake not the pre/early war one, that the SVT-38 and early production SVT-40 would have.

It unfortunate about the cut magazine, but it looks nice otherwise.
And its a TULA which is nice. A little more rare then Izhevsk's

Let us know how it shoots.

PS, was there lots of cosmo or grease?

As has been stated, that is NOT an SVT38 receiver. The ledge where the markings are is MUCH shorter on an SVT38. Also, your rifle was likely not rebuilt in 1943. More likely 1973 (!). The stocks got all misxed and matched around along with bolts, etc. during the rebuilds.

Also, WHY ON EARTH DO THE RUSSKIES CUT THE MAGS?!?!?!?!?
poor decision on their part. lol

They didn't always. The last Tradex import which was also sold out of P&S had pinned original length mags. These cut mags seem to have first been imported by Westrifle.

I ordered a decent Kovrov from Westrifle which I immediately returned maybe a year ago because it arrived with one of those awful hacked magazines - their ad copy at the time was really ambiguous about it and the photos didn't clearly show the shortening.

Bottom line is, an original length mag is a $200+ item as extra mags have always been in short supply, so factor that in of you buy one as a colelctor. These cut mags aren't worth $20 to anyone collecting legit WW2 items. It's the franken-pin of the SVT40 world.

I suspect it is done because of some stupid mis-interpretation of Ukrainian or Russian export laws or similar issue, not unlike the SKS mag fiasco.

Thanks for the info everyone. There is nowhere near as much info available on these as there is on SKSs. Hopefully the new large shipment and more buyers will expand the knowledge base more!

It took me months to find a full length magazine and it wasn't cheap ( bayonet either). All great for collectors value, but as a hunting rifle, I prefer the chopped magazine. The full size mag catches and grabs on anything and everything and doesn't like coming in and out of the case or a rifle holder/carrier on the quad.

The SVT-40 sling is another hard to find item. Many came with a Mosin sling. Though it works, not the proper collectors item. An interim sling that does work is the VZ-58 sling. It is thinner, but it fits.

An original sling would be near impossible to find. although I did buy a late production PPSH-41 sling on Ebay witch is near identical to an SVT-40 sling.

I've got an older import SVT-40 which came with leather sling. Neither me or the seller had any idea of what kind of sling is this then, and it turned out to be an early original SVT sling, according to the web resource. I guess, back then they were shipping these SVT's with original slings...

The problem in disappearing of original slings and bayos is ebay. Original one is being stolen and sold off slowly all over the world for the past 15 years. Many people making good money for items that did not cost them a penny.
