My take on the SL8.

Once you add the bipod and a folding stock you're at the same price as a PE-90. :(

Maybe I am the only one, but I like the factory stock over the folding one on the SL8-4.
And the PE-90 to me doesnt look as good.
But a question I do have is, how do the two compare accuracy wise?

With 300 yards really being the max I will be shooting.

I'm not really sure. I suspect they are fairly comparable. My test target with the PE-90 is for 300 meters. It's pretty impressive. The only problem is ammo for this rifle. It shoots 62 grain decently. I have some 64 I'll be hand loading. But.... it's designed for 63 grain. I may break down and get some Ruag 63 grain to test out it's accuracy.

Either are pretty nice. When I was buying (a few years ago), the SL8 had a problem with the stock cracking. Also I wasn't wild about the scope rail set up. I liked the looks of the SL8 and it's supposed to be accurate. If the G-36C for sale wasn't $36,000 I would have bought one of those in a heart beat. They look great.

Yep, the SL8 doesn't chew the poop out of the brass though. Like I just told a friend the SL8 likes to hold its shooter tight in a gentle loving embrace, something the Germans are known for.

Does the PE90 come with a bipod?

Mine only dents the rim of the brass. You can still use it for reloads. However some do dent the middle which screws you for reloads.

Yup the PE-90 comes with an integrated folding bipod. It's similar to the aftermarket one for the SL-8. Also the stock is a folder.

You are not the only one. The factory SL8 stock fits me well and I find it very comfortable to shoot. I think its just one those "love it or hate it" things with this stock and it works for me.

Looking forward to getting an SL8 of my own soon, and was wondering if anyone was shooting cheap(er) 55g factory ammo reasonably well out to 150m with one? Minute of Gopher is all I'm looking for, and as I'm too lazy to roll my own and too cheap to buy anything better than PMC, WWB or UMC it would be nice if one of these would work.

Or would 62g SS109 be a better choice? I see there's some PMC available now at comparable prices to 55g, and would grab some if there was a noticeable advantage to using it.

Coming soon at Arms East.

That's a nice rig supra, does it shoot?

Mine seems to shoot great. I've put about 100 rounds of 55gr UMC through it and if I do my part I can get MOA groupings, as with most rifles it is a better shot then me. I've also been practicing the bidon aiming concept and other snap shooting drills so my groupings have temperarily suffered as a result. I'll bet some of the people not getting the tigher groups with 55gr may be the problem themselves, but every rifle is different.

I'm hoping to work up a load for it this winter so I can use it for hunting next year. Many people are getting < 1/2 MOA groupings once they have worked up a proper load. This rifle does not dissapoint. At 100m I can shoot clays every time with the 55gr UMCs when I do my part.

Have you fired both? The factory stock a a fully adjustable target stock of fine quality and has only one flaw in that the thumbhole is a bit small for those with larger hands and its a bit heavy. There is a new target stock coming online for the SL8 that should solve the grip problem, I'll let you know when it gets here, how it feels.

This rifle will shoot 300m tight groupings all day long.

I believe the stock gracking issue was sloved quite a while ago and I'm sure HK will honor any issues you may have.

Personally I would take the SL8 over the PE90 simply because the rail comes with the rifle and offers offers a ton of mounting options because of its length, even the short rail is more then enough. Lets be honest you're only gonna run irons on these rifles till you can offord the optics.

The SL8 is very much a tuned G36 so you should expect a reduction in accuracy with the G36 although all reports are that the G36 is tight as well. There is a G36C in the EE for $8000 right now, go get it.

Even though I own a folder I really don't see the point. I won't be jumping out of any planes with my personal rifles anytime soon and with the full length BBL its kind of a waste. The only time I have folded mine was to see how it works.

Where have you seen the heavier ammo for sale? PM me.

I have never fired either, and never even held the folder.
But the factory SL8 stock fits my hand very well. I am only 5'10" and 150lbs soaking wet, so my hands seem to fit the stock perfect. And I dont find it all that heavy at all, but I am coming from a 26" heavy barrel CZ550 22-250 and that thing is a beast. Besides it will probably only ever see bipod use :p
Do you have a link to the other stock though?

Tight 300m groups is perfect, and that with factory rolled 55gr ammo even?

EDIT: P&D ent had some 6x gr ammo last time I was there. I want to say 62 and 68, but I wasnt really looking at it so cant quite remember.

What is wrong with the H$K marketing team? Why sell what the people do not want? Give them a semi-automatic G-36 instead of the monstrosity they now sell and call an SL-8. It takes a thousand dollars or more for the buyers to try to get it looking like what they wanted in the first place; the G-36.

That would be called German Gun laws not HK marketing.

Any pictures of the new stock? Like I said I liked the SL8-4. I just found there were a few issues at the time when I was looking at them.

As for $8000. Umm $2500 max is all I would pay. It's neat but it's not a 8K rifle. I would put that money towards a DSR-1 instead.

Also I bought the "target" model of the PE-90. It has an integrated picitiny rail that is metal and directly connected to the metal receiver. The sights on this one are flip up back up sights only. Here's a picture.

Here's the 300m test target.

In the future I might consider getting a HK SL8-4. I'd be interested in seeing the new target stock. There are lots of add on features for this rifle. I've seen one with the HERRA stock adapter. With the right stock it looked pretty darn good.

Looking forward to seeing them.
Also that folder from HERA that Arms East will be selling looks very good. The mag conversion is a real plus as well. 10 round AR pistol mags :D

May have to revisit the SL8 in a few months.

Yes you will. If you don't mind my asking what was your target model worth?

What scope would you guys recommend for 300 meters but also gophers?
I was thinking the 7-21 bushnell 3200 or the 6-24 bushnell 4200, but not sure if its worth going to the 4200.
Or am I looking in the wrong direction?

I like the Leupold but prefer the Zeiss Conquest with Rapid Z reticule. The price is also very close.
