My Tavor sling setup

After reading practically every Tavor thread on CGN I realized how inadequate a human being I am and how empty my life is without one so I caved to peer pressure and bought one this week.

I added a few accessories, but this was my first mod, adding the QD socket. I pretty much followed your example except I countersunk the socket in the stock. By doing this the screw that came with the Magpul socket was long enough to secure it. I'm quite happy with the result, now to the range!

What is the part number you purchase to do it?
Did you had anything we should watch during modification, as per your experiences?

Look nice... really inspiring!!!

I ran one from the start of thier availabilty up until about 2 months ago. Finally realised how little I gained from having it other than more weight. Neat idea, looks cool, but if it is not really helping then it os probably more of a hinderance.

Idk anymore about whats ideal, but I know after having used one for months I ended up taking it off and selling it.

TV-PressPass said something to me after he got back from SHOT SHOW that has kinda stuck. He said that while he was talking to the Israeli IWI reps at IWI US' booth they made the comment of "Why?" towards the numerous aftermarket parts, namely the rails and handguards.

This has been echoing around in my head. At first I thought it was because they were being snobish like you would expect HK guys to be (as in "we produce a perfect product that can not be improved and should not be modified"), but then as I though harder I realised it was likely because they could see there was no true advantage to *most* of the aftermarket parts, most of which have potential negative effects such as:
-weight
-increased height over bore
-disrupted ergonomics

Modification is great, just don't loose sight of what your goal for that platform was when you started.

WHY? Tacticool; that's why. It may be a shallow reason but if I am not fighting a war I a gun that looks cool, even at the cost of a little bit of functionality. No question the XL keymod forend messes with the balance. It's a sacrifice some are willing to make.

I used a Magpul Type 3 QD socket which includes a 10-24 1" screw. When you open the buttpad and look inside you can see the two moulded "pockets" for the QD sockets on each side. I think it is designed for a Magpul Type 2 QD socket as it is a little shorter, but then you do not get a machine screw with the Type 2 kit. The perfect match would be a Type 2 socket and a 1" machine screw.

I opened up the pocket with a 15/32 drill bit in a hand held chuck. I think an electric drill would go too deep too fast. I then opened up the hole a little more with a 1/2 inch bit, again turning it slowly by hand to the depth I wanted. Finally I smoothed out the inside of the hole with a 1/2 tapered reamer, again by hand.

At that point the QD socket is a tight friction fit, but it has some serrations around the lower outside of the QD socket that need to be taken down to the diameter of the rest of the socket and hole in the stock, I did that with a couple of swipes on the grinder. I finally made a slight bevel with a file on the outside bottom circumference of the socket so it would ease into the hole. I then used a plastic faced mallet to tap the socket into the hole. The screw went in from the other side. Because I used the longer Type 3 socket the material was really thin on the inside of the moulded stock socket hole once I had drilled it out, so I reinforced it on the inside of the stock with some JB Weld.....the socket isn't going anywhere. This would not be an issue if you used the shorter Type 2 socket and thus you would not have to drill as deep, if that makes sense.

I would advise against using power tools, unless you are very skilled, which I am not!

Thank you! This is more than expected and really useful... time for shopping and having fun with the Tavor modification... thanks again!

Really appreciated!

Good stuff! Now I know what to order and how to do it.

I was going to put on a Keymod fore end, but aside from the 'fugly factor' I was concerned about the added weight. I think the Tavor is "tacticool" out of the box. I may add strips of skateboard tape to the factory fore end for better 'gription'.
Hell, I even like the factory trigger. It may be heavier than I like, but I get a clean beak, so I can live with it until I put some more rounds downrange.

I'm trying to decide if the manticore buttpad makes up for the rail height enough to run the stock rail.

But hell... I was ready to buy a K16i but now I have no idea anymore.

Deciding what you want to do with the gun IS key.

Right now my bad azz rifles get shot from field positions on the range as we are finding it difficult to promote 3-Gun locally. The only match I can go to is an annual event several hours away. I'm involved in enough shooting events already to the point I don't want to travel long distances to any more. Pity, as we have an excellent 500m range and several IPSC/IDPA pistol ranges.

Have yet to take the Tavor afield as it is spring bear season and I don't want to encounter a bear with a .223 in my paws! I'm much more comfortable with my 50-70 Sharps.
I've been told that the CO's are having fits over guys with Tavors and SKS rifles. They're almost SURE you must be doing something illegal 'cause you are toting such a rifle.
