CZ97 & Beretta PX4 SD 45ACP are good choices.
Smith & Wesson 4506 with a trigger job is nice piece.

The S&W 4506 would be an interesting option but they don't seem to be commonly found nowadays. I only ever saw one for sale used.

I had a 625 like the one above in 45 colt. The whole gun was perfect! Never saw another gun built to that degree.

Any 1911 in the 1000 to 1200 dollar range is good right out of the box. The tinkering is a personal preference and not absolutely neccessary in the 1911 platform. They are a larger gun so I recommend trying one or at least putting your hands on one first. The Remington 1911 enhanced has all the good stuff on it and it around the 1000 dollar mark.

I disagree. I bought a new Springfield RO 9mm a couple years back. It had a bad barrel from factory. I had it for 6 months. The gun smith had it for six months.
My Norincos were better than my new Springfield.
