WOW, what a weekend!
So, we strike off from home at 7:45am on Thursday morning. Had a nice trip in & only took us 6.75 hours to get to our camp located in Longue Rive, Quebec (within the Zec Iberville) . Once we got settled in, we ate a good supper and headed to bed early.
Friday morning, we were up before the birds & headed out. Sat in a stand for a bit & walked for a bit. Nothing! Went back to camp & had a good lunch & struck off for the stand again for the evening hunt. I hadn’t seen or heard anything and I knew that my hubby was walking around the back side of the lake, so I just waited it out at the stand. At around 5:30, I heard 3 close shots & got ready in case whatever it was showed up in front of me. About 5 minutes later, a very winded, excited husband came outta the woods towards me with a smile that stretched from me to you! :)
He took me to show me his trophy & then we went back to camp to get the bikes & help!!
It's a small 1 1/2 year old bull. Nice looking lil feller!
Needless to say, the rest of the evening consisted of binge drinking and lots of work!! We finally got him strung up in the tree at about 1:00am.
Saturday morning, no one felt like going out. We lazed around camp till the afternoon hunt. Out we went. Nothing!! brrrrrrrrrr
My hubby had decided that we should leave the following morning in order to get his moose taken care of before having to go to work on Tuesday (today).
I was feeling a little blue, since I had only gotten to hunt a mere 3 times & we had originally planned to leave on Monday only. I asked what time he’d planned on leaving & he said around 10:00am. I asked if I would have enough time to go out early in the morning for at least a couple of hours. He said……SURE, you go ahead & I will stay and pack up, but be back at camp by 8:00 – 8:30am. I said okie dokie! My friend Lou said that she’d go along with me…..Yeah!!
Sunday morning alarm goes off at 5:30am. Brrrrrrr so cold in the camp!! I mustered up enough energy to hop out of bed & wake Lou up. By 6:00am, we were on our way.
Walked up to the stand where we let out a few calls & got an answer from a female….. We were thinking …… “what?” But we weren’t sure if it was a real moose or someone else using a call. A few more calls, but nothing else! It was 7:55 & we decided that we had better head back to camp……… I was so sad & discouraged! We were walking down the trail, talking about the upcoming deer season & we were hoping that it would be a little more successful!
OMG! I looked up at the end of the trail & saw something very large & BLACK… hmmmm, what the???? It moved…… I grabbed Lou by the arm & said …..Oh my god! It’s a moose ! She said......"No way!"
It started to spook and took a few steps in the opposite direction…… EEK! I let out a little grunt. It stopped! I crunched down & walked REALLY slowly. I Was in front of Lou & she couldn’t see it yet. I stepped out and saw very large ears but no horns…. Her shoulder area was just about all I could see other than her ears, so I pulled up my trusty Sako 30-06 & let off a shot. She stumbled, and turned up the hill. She went a few more steps & turned broadside. I shot again! I saw her buckle, but told Lou to shoot also. She took one shot and asked me if she should shoot again, and I said no…..wait! I could see that she was wobbling & then down she went!
YAHOO! :dancingbanana: We yelled and screamed & ran back to camp to get the guys! Do you think they believed us? NOPE!
They thought that we had just shot off some shots to pick on them. It took about 10 minutes to convince them before they agreed to go and check it out for themselves!
Lou & I gutted her & the boys hooked 2 of the atv’s together and hooked her up the the last one. They started down the trail, back to camp & then stopped, hopped off the bikes & told us that it was our moose & that we should be the ones taking back to camp. OKIE DOKIE! We each hopped on a bike & after about a 15 minute ride, our prize was at camp!! The guys hooked up the chain block about 4 feet higher & told us to pull her up. We did! Once up there, we stood there admiring her for a while!!! We were soooo proud! We had done it all alone (with some help from our guys of course)! Woo-hoo – what a feeling!
Here are a couple of pics of both the hubby's and mine & Lou's!

Well Done! It's nice to see woman into hunting and especially ones that are brave enough to go in the bush alone. Cant wait until i get my first moose.

Congrats on your first moose. I have only started hunting moose 4 years ago after a lifetime of whitetail hunting and now I am hooked. Any moose, no matter how large, is a trophy. congrats again.

also got my first moose this very weekend, also a lil' one, year and a half female

my story however, much less interesting.
Drove to the camp, dressed up, walked into position, sat, called, sprayed urine, waited 40 mins. Mom and girl showed up at the salt block set up in the marsh. Girl went down immediately after the shot, we pulled her out of the thick mud, I gutted her, we brought her back to camp, end of story
