I, too, would like to know the issues your friend was having with his SR22.
Recently I took my sons and daughter out to the range with an SR22 and the VTR. I could tell the same story as yours except it would be the other way around. I replaced the extractor and hammer in the VTR and it works most of the time (much better than out of the box) in terms of feeding and extraction but still has issues with the Remington 30 round mag. Not nearly as much the more it gets used.
The SR22 seems to eat anything without a glitch if I use TI mags or steel lips BC mags.
I would have to say, in terms of accuracy, its a dead heat at the moment. Each gun likes a certain brand of ammo and will shoot it very well.
I like both of them and don't plan on getting rid of either one soon. If I had to choose, however, it would be the SR22 because it is sturdier, has had no issues, is at least as accurate as the 597 VTR and I like the fact you can get the rail for it from Ruger (Snap Shot in Montreal among others) without "level" issues.
Don't get me wrong. If your VTR shot that well without any problems and is accurate, you have a winner there. It certainly looks great with what you have done to it as well. I am just curious about what problems the SR22 was having.
