My Wife is Pregnant so I need a .22

My father and I bought my son a Savage Cub for his 6th birthday. Threw a 6-9 bipod and a 3-9x40 bushnell on it. For under 400 bucks my son has a "cool" rifle that shoots moa in the right hands. It even has an accutrigger!

If you want a really nice plinker, I mean very nice quality and very accurate with quality stainless magazines and GREAT sight picture, buy a Marlin Papoose 70PSS. It's a beauty.

start with a water gun, next with a airgun, follow by a .22, m-14 and finally a .50 BMG....
If you know the good person, you can finish with an Abraham tank!!

It is my absolute favorite toy at the moment! Mine is as accurate as the top of the line model 60SS that i just traded away. My Papoose just got that much more use. Too much fun.

Cricketts were $99.00 in Walmart in Rapid City SD. Haven't found one that cheap here so I bought a $60 cooey 39. Cut it short. Spent $10 on primer $20 on Paint $15 on stencils and $15 on contrasting paint. I will be into this for more than I paid for the Shotgun I gave my wife for our wedding. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

Thanks for the congratulations and the suggestions everybody. I realize I am a little ahead of things shopping for a .22 for child that hasn't been born but I know I am going to by her/him one anyways so I might as well shop around. If they decide they don't like to shoot or really want a different .22 thats ok we can alter it, sell it (probably keep it anyways) or swap it out then. Since my wife and I don't plan on finding out the ###, I will probably keep the rifle gender neutral.

I would like a single shot as that is what I learned to shoot with and believe in the principles it teaches. I also want quality open sights as that is also how I learned to shoot and am thankful for it.

I have tossed around the idea of the savage cub, TC Hot Shot, and a cooey. Although I haven't handled the first two. The CZ scout is new to me but I will have to check it out too.

For the record this is a planned pregnancy and not a surprise. Guess I shoulda worded the title differently. Also my personal finances are in order and rug rat or two is well within the budget. My wife and I both established our careers well before deciding on bringing kids into this world. I hope to be the best father I can and look forward to all the happiness and memories and stress that children bring.

Thanks and keep the suggestions coming.

i think by wanting to buy a gun for the young one now you are showing you will be a good dad. I have a .22 for each of my boys waiting in the gun cabinet for when they are ready for them.

Now if only Dads gun was as cool as Grandpas gun then the whole family could enjoy. ;)

I bought my daughter a Pink Daisy lever BB gun for this years 4th birthday. I already have 4 .22's (Cooey 39, Cooey 60, Lakefield 64B, and Browning BL-22) and will probably add more as I have two little girls. My oldest for sure is ready to come hunting and is quite interested in shooting.

Buy any .22 you can afford they will all shot with in a child's ability.

Buy the .22 - you owe it to yourself. Most of your play money will dissapear soon enough.

AND

Quite possible the most unfortunate thread title I've read on CGN this year.:D

Oh, and congrats!

Oh my... guess it's a bad idea to judge a book by it's cover. The motives behind "My Wife is Pregnant so I need a .22" are readily confused with the motives behind "The gophers are breeding" and "I have coyotes on my lawn". I must agree, the most unfortunate title this year.

I think every Canadian Boy (or Girl) should at least learn on an old single shot Cooey. I'd go as far as saying you can't be a real Canadian Gun Nut until you've fired (and preferrably owned) a Cooey :D

Don't disagree with this sentiment, so I bought a Cooey 75 this year with the "whale belly" style stock. My small-framed, 10 yr. old daughter can barely hold it, let alone...#### the trigger~the spring is very strong. They're very much a full-sized rifle. Not going to sell it mind you (it shoots too well) but I am looking at getting her a small .22lr single shot, either the Henry Mini Bolt, or Savage's new "Rascal" model when it comes out.

Congrats. Another shooter added to our growing community. Agree with the posts here that its a helleva good reason (excuse) to justify expanding the armory.

It is my absolute favorite toy at the moment! .......My Papoose just got that much more use. Too much fun.

Cooey would be the "right" thing to get but lets face it, we're looking for that "justification". I too would go with the Papoose. Although its a semi, the compact size will be friendly to toddlers. When the "little one" first shoots, just load the mag with one round at a time. This way, when the kids get proficient, you don't have to spend money to transition from single shot or bolt to a semi. Am dying to get one myself but nothing available so I put in an order earlier this month. Hopefully we should see them again in Canada by March according to Marlin. Hey, we all need some type of dependable, accurate and compact survival gun!!!!

LOL.... read the title and figured you were going to go knock off the guy that knocked up your lady....LOL.... congrats!.... here is my suggestion.... Savage model cub t.... 3.5 pounds... 16" barrel.... $210.00

TC hotshot won an informal comparison for kids rifle in a gun mag - nice action. If you find one you like, I'd get one now. Sometimes they go out of production or cut corners on later ones.
