If memory serves, we covered about nine miles of Muskeg and creeks, poplar stands and hills but Christy fufilled her dream of getting her first moose and what a great job she did.
The weather has been very mild all season, making it great for an enjoyable day out. It also made for moose that were content to lay low not having to eat to stay warm and then no snow for tracking made for a real challenge.
Persistance paid off on Saturday, we had gone quite a ways the day before and this day was looking to be just like that one again with no sign of anything. As we crossed a field bordered by a creek with skeg on the other side, Christy spotted a two year old dry cow standing in the scrub brush. At first I thought she was pulling my leg, her excitement proved otherwise in a very short time frame. I wheeled around to see her cow standing not 80yds away gazing at us.
The cow stepped into the bush and was gone. I ran west to wait for it to come to an opening, Christy went east. I had picked up the partner license so I could shoot too if need be but that was only in case of things turning sour. The moose did not go west, instead it showed up in front of Christy again. This time she knew what to do. Keep in mind this is her second big game animal she has ever shot so her nerves were a bit frayed!
Down on her duff she goes, resting her elbows on her knees like I showed her for her antelope. I asked her what she was doing, thinking the moose was long gone by now but she says "I can see it!" quite excitedly. I ask her if she can get a shot and am answered back with a rather loud muzzle blast from the Brno 7x57 she is packing. Don't ask dumb questions I guess......
It did not sound like a hit to me but after running over and behind her, sure enough, the cow is standing there not flicking her ears, nothing.
My bride is in the midst of shucking the spent round and sliding another into the pipe. Meanwhile I have drawn a bead on the ribs with my 9,3 from the left of Christy's position. At the report of Christy's shot the image in my scope crumples and does not even flinch. I wince at the muzzle blast in my right ear which I am not used to getting but keep trained on the pile in the bush now very still. Both shots proved to be lethal but the second one hit the spine speeding up the process.
Yelling to Christy that she got her and it is all done she jumps to her feet comes over and gives me a high five. Without question that is the most excited little lady I have seen in the 15 years I have had the pleasure of knowing her.
We are down across the creek and over to her in very short time. The rest as they say is history.
The very best part of all is we got this moose on the same property as I got my first one 16 years prior. The landowners who are very good friend's of ours got me started in hunting. I am forever grateful to them.
We went back to the farm where Mervin and Sherry were building fence. They dropped everything when they saw us coming. We had lunch then took the tractor over as close as we could get it. We drug the moose with our quad to the tractor. Mervin's trail back to the farm was a dusty one and we didn't want to drag the moose all that way.
We made quick work of skinning her and then quartered it. As per ususal we gave them half of the moose as a thanks for all the years of fun and access to their land. I'm not sure who was more proud that day, Christy for getting her moose, me for seeing her get her moose or Mervin and Sherry for knowing they are the reason we are having so much fun.
Special thanks to Crazy Davey for offering to help many times and also to Lazy Ike for offering some special spots to go looking to fill a tag. We are very grateful!
Oh, and Dave, I have lots of moose meat when you come over next, don't worry about bringing anything! LOL
Thanks for reading!
