So I bought one of the old Brinks Wingmasters from Casey at TacOrd, such a good deal that I couldn't pass it up. The shotgun showed up in pretty rough shape (which I expected), it was filthy all the way through, some light surface rust on barrel and trigger assembly, lots of Knicks and wearing on the bluing, cuts all over the wood and a chunk missing from the forend. Although it looked like it had been run over by a Brinks truck, the action was smooth as butter, I own a grizzly and a 500 and have shot a few 870's but never a Wingmaster, I new when I racked that slide that I had to clean this old girl up. I bought some 70's era Wingmaster wood off of a fellow CGN'r as well as a 12.5" barrel, picked up an S+J extended safety and some flat armacoat and went to work. Stripped the old Wingmasters old bluing off with some fine sandpaper and scorch brite pads, tore it down completely and cleaned everything with brake clean. Hung all the pieces in my garage and painted them, let them sit for a bit and then in the oven they went, nothing like the smell of baking Wingmaster :) Pulled it out of the oven and reassembled, I'm still going to stain the stock but I couldn't wait to put it back together.

After

And with the Chinese Cousin

I'm pretty happy with the results, I will sand a refinish the stock and switch out the recoil pad, but for now I'll leave it alone. It was a fun little project to do.

Nice project , a classic 870 . How much was Tac Ord charging for the surplus 870s as they seem to have been sold in different configuations and some guys bought more than one. Could you pick and choose or did Tac Ord do the choosing for the buyer based on condition and price......or were they all priced the same regardless of the condition and configuation of the 870 ?

I believe they were all the same price, and I think if you could get to Casey's shop he would bring out a couple for you to pick thru. Mine is going into the park tank in half hour. One thing I did was change the ejector so it can handle 3" shells since I was going to re finish anyway. For about $20 and 15 minutes it's worth it. I've also picked up a police sear spring and new extractor. I think I have enough Teflon left for one last gun so it's getting Teflon coated. I think I will finish it with Magpul furniture. Of all the synthetic stocks I like them the best.

They certainly don't make them that good anymore.

How much did these surplus Wingmasters sell for? Someone asked up there but no answer... I'm curious.

In another thread on CGN , a member told me that he paid 300 for two 870s from this same dealer ( 150 each ) , i am not sure if this included tax or not......

I was on a waiting list since 2012, but he didn't even know at that time if he was going you get more. It was a surprise when he emailed me saying he got a few 870 Wingmaster.....
