My word...it wasnt even a Norinco

I've been doin a lot of reading other forums. It's interestin to see the growing negative attitude towards Springfield stateside LOL the guys "in the know" down there are praising poly's and norincos and trashing SA LOL
And those are the older norincos that the fulton crew used to carry on about. Ya know the same story we've seen up here... Soft bolts, bad receivers and on and on. Yet experienced m14 owners/builders in US would rather have a rinco than a sproingfield LOL, especially a Ron Smith tuned rinco.

This has been very interesting and some what troubling as I have a 2009 M305 on way to me as I type this letter , I purchased it on the EE . The seller was Excellent and the price was good ! The question is , was this a good purchase for Me ?
I have heard stories from both sides of the camp , my impression was the Older M305 were poor quality and the Newer ones had all the bugs taken out . I sit and look at that crate of 308 /1000 rounds of surplus I received yesterday , wondering .......
Two weeks ago I saw a Brand new , right out of the box Glock 37 Gen 4 , Blow up in a guys hand ! He was shooting one handed ( right ) , if he had held the gun with two hands he would have been crippled for life ,,, route cause was discovered ,, the FMJ bullet crimp was to excessive , he had not set his reloading die correctly , he is an experienced hand loader / comp shooter , it was Not a Double charge as we had first suspected . Still a hard crimp on a single 45 auto shell , in a top quality ( $$ ) gun and Boom !!
Now you guys have me wondering ...

I'm sure others will back me up on this )
Personally, given the current state of affairs regarding QC, I would pay more for a nice 2009 than I would for a new one.
In fact I would go so far as to give a new one a wide berth at any price.
You done good, real good
Goes without saying, pull it apart and have a good look before you send a single round through it.
Mine is loving 150 fmjbt handloads and is hovering around 1.5 f the Gods are smiling on me.
I believe you are going to see the older Norcs climb in price when pple recognise they are a of a superior quality to the new ones.
Enjoy and if you don't like it I'll buy it off ya)

Meself I would shoot as is first, and then throw in the new OP spring guide. That way you can see and feel the difference yourself, rather than just take everybodies word for it.
Be wary of changing too much at once eh, sometimes the small things make the biggest difference.
Read all the stickies and get one of the "clinics" if you get a chance, fun way to polish up your rough diamond

I would have to mostly agree
While ALL the chinese rifles have common issues like slightly off index barrels, crappy QC on flash hiders and rear sights.... 2009 and older would also be my preference.
Personally I don't like the weak durability of the finish on the '09's but otherwise, that batch did have some nicer rifles in it

I have an order in at Brownells for some Springfield parts , springs , shim kit , ejector ect .
I'll add slowly and see what effect it has on grouping with the surplus stuff then start working up some hand loads .

I guess no matter what you buy today there can be issues , except some that go BOOM !! May require a little more advance care to prevent ...

That's some excellent info and pictures. I had another thread going where I am having problems with my bolt dropping out by the rear lug and got some measurements as well. Did you have any other measurements from the bolt or inside of the receiver? I wouldn't mind comparing my measurement points to a few other year models as well. It would be greatly appreciated.
I also forgot to mention this is a 2012 marked Norinco shorty, if it is worth anything.
I grabbed the calipers and measured a few points.
#1 - 1.145"
#2 - 1.082"
#3 - 0.978"
#4 - 0.985"
#5 - 1.113"
I take it the hook you are talking about is #6 in the picture; the bolt was machined like that with no bare steel visible there.

This thread makes me a bit sad. It reminds me of when I was one of the M1A/M305's great enthusiasts, as well as when I much more enjoyed the social aspect of sharing my enthusiasm with others. I posted quite a bit more then.
I post differently now. Whereas then I was very comfortable posting to share about my growing experience with the m1a type rifle; debating its inherent merits and flaws, exploring general technical rebuild stories & experience' participating in troubleshooting threads to help diagnose and fix problems; and conducting failure analysis on the "odd" rifle that went kaboom.....now, after having rebuilt many many dozen of these rifles and personally having inspected at least a half a dozen type m1a kabooms, I don't post at all about any of that experience. Now I'll only post anecdotal range review type stories about guns that are new to me, and even my appetite for that is almost gone.
Why? Because there are many still-devoted (sometimes religiously) folks who are so emotionally attached to their rifles that they can't see objectively, so much so that they use what are becoming more and more venhemous personal attacks in their fevered defense of whatever their favorite gun is. And after watching this for more than 15 years, my desire to participate is somewhat extinguished. It's not that I can't handle it when opinions differ and we disagree, rather it's the increasingly bitter way we go about it.
For those of you still with enough fire in your bellies to engage....good on you. I hope you can find ways to keep it civil, because without that our community will continue to shrink, resulting in a population governed by group think and whatever's become the entrenched status quo.
I've been around long enough to remember when Ardent loved his M1A, so I have some empathy for his position on the subject rifle and the quality of what's currently out there. I'm too tired and worn out to wade in with my own opinion, so you all will have to handle that without me.
Rather, for nostalgic posterity here's something from my now long-hibernating online battlerifle match. Ardent with his M1A in 2007:
And while I'm down the rabbit hole of memory lane, here's me when the m305 was my great love:

Thank you for your comments . As a well seasoned, battle scared veteran of the BB's , you still have appositive attitude , other wise would you even bother posting and adding some beautiful pic/s .Your right , some people no matter what the item is , guns , cars , stocks , ect , they become to attached and forget what they really are . I really like the M14 but it is still a tool that is used in my sport of shooting , like golf , if the club needs some TLC to get it perfect for the golfer , then do it , if he tries and the club is just no darn good , toss it and try another brand or type . It's a tool that it's ,, Sure some people can let go , even if it's so bad but that's people .
I am trying to work with others to see if I can all make our shooting tools work better through sharing of knowledge and information . Those who wish to argue or fight about what is best , well that's their right but I will ignore them and work with other shooters so we all can improve ours selves and our knowledge of our tools we use in the sport of shooting .
