My father- in- law gave me two cartridges the other day, he was wondering what calibre they are. He used to own a 30/40 Krag rifle (he gave it to his brother-in-law)years ago.Looking at the base of the cartridges, above the primer it says"58" directly down from that (at 6 o'clock) is "3", and at (9 o'clock) is "TE", and at (3 o'clock) is "D". Also, he used to own a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. Which is it? I will have pictures later. Thanks.

The .30-40 Krag is rimmed. The 6.5 x 55 is rimless.

That looks like a French hs. Measurements and pics would help but a guess is they are 7.5 French Mas.

I agree French MAS 7.5x54 MM cartridge.


A) 3- 58 Date of manufacture.


B) "TE" Factory code.

C) "D". Code for Metal maker.
