Buddy of mine sez he has a rifle in 8mm mauser. It is a straight pull bolt action. Now I have not even seen it so w/o pics worthless animation don't fly. Just wondering if in the forum's collective knowlege, is, was there such a critter? Claims it was from ww1

The Germans reworked lots of the straight pull Styers to 8mm mauser from 8 x 56R. You can usually tell by the small half round cut out on the back of the ejection port to allow the longer cartridge cases to eject.

A conversion to 8x57 on the Austrian M1895 straight pull called the M95M IIRC was done in Yugoslavia. It is much more likely to be in 8x56R cal.

on the top of the receiver is there a large 'S'? if so it is in 8mm mauser. if not it is in 8x56R

The M95 Austrian was originally made in 8X50r.
The 8x56R conversions will be stamped on the chamber S (Austrian conversion) or H (Hungary).
The 8X57 conversions will be stamped M95/24 (Austrian conversion) or M95M (Yugoslav). In addition the 8X57s are cut for a Mauser clip guide.

If it IS in 8mm Mauser, it could be an Austrian Mannlicher-Steyr M-95 Rework. Surprisingly I have heard many German soldiers prefered it to thier Gewehr and so a program was set up by certain arsenals to rework a number of the rifles.
